You need to locate your local VA office - pretty much every county has one. they can tell you the process, procedure and most likely outcome. Off the top of my head I would say at best an unpgrade to a general discharge if conditions warrant it, but don't count on it.
You will need to submit DD Form 293. Assistance from a VA rep would be helpful since they have handled these before.

Get a hold of the Disabled America Veterans Organization and tell them your story. They usually have an office near the VA. www.dav.org 1-877-426-2838 Try the web first. I think the phone number is a single chapter. You can not give up until you have figured out everything in your pathway. For example, If the issue of disability comes up, which it should, it has to be connected to the event that caused you to be discharged. Like if you got hurt and then had emotional reaction which is still bothering you. This is important. You need to have a Doctor diagnose you with the emotional, physiological and or physical disability. You have many steps to go through, but every journey starts with a single step and you already took that step. Good Luck.

Depends on your particular example of what happened and these "emotional problems" you experienced.....don't know much beyond that.
Armed services bootcamps, inculding the Marines, now have some PC guidelines to abide by today. But with that aside, bootcamp can be an emotionally challenging and draining experience--all geared to expose a recruit to the difficulties of combat and capture as a POW.
Everything done during bootcamps are supposed to be aimed towards prepping recruits for war--and war IS hell.

I think you're pretty much out of luck. Unless you started seeing a psychiatrist and this was a breakthrough that you had in therapy and it was on record, you can't just call a VA rep and get it changed. It would also depend on how long ago you're talking. You would have to prove that event in boot camp was what caused you to have emotional troubles, which was what lead you to do what you did to get a dishonorable discharge. If I were you, I'd forget about it and move on.

xtowgrunt has hit the nail on the head. There is a procedure, and you can use the link he provided for you. It is not automatic by any means, but it is possible to upgrade a discharge after a time.

you can't that is on your military record and you can't change that. I don't think that you can even go back into the military with that on there.
