About.com, which cites a pdf file of the CDC's document - Mean Body Weight, Heigh and Body Mass Index, United States 1960-2002 - says that the average male height was 5'9 1/2'' and 5'4'' for women in 2002. It also has break downs by age if you are really interested in looking at it.

The average height for men in the US is about 5 ft. 9 in. and the average height for women is about 5 ft. 4 in.
I read this in a book somewhere; sorry, I cannot remember the title.

I'm 5'10 and taller than almost every woman I know. my dr. chart says 5'7 for women and 5'10 for men.
