My daughter just turned 10. She started developing enough to need a bra last year. I noticed the last time she showered she is starting to get hair down there. I have heard girls usually start their periods the same age their moms did. I didn't start until I was 13 but I don't think I was as young as her when I started to develop in other areas. Any info?

I started wearing a bra in 4th grade and probably needed one a little earlier than that. I started my period at 10. I felt like my childhood ended too early, but I'm rather enjoying go through menopause in my 30's. I know I'll be done with it....finally!!

But, back to point, yes girls often do start around the same age as their mothers. However, it's proven that now days because of the steroids and such in the foods we eat, especially meats, girls are developing much sooner. My daughter is about to turn 9 and is wearing a bra already....and she needs it!! I figured since I was 10 when I started, she had better know what a period is.

I had a very short talk with her, then gave her the book "The Care & Keeping of YOU"....The Body Book for Girls. It's an American Girl book. It's just wonderful and I recommend it to all mothers with daughters. It has everything from hair and skin care to developing breasts and periods. It even talks about tampons and pads....how to choose what's best for you. It deals with emotions and acne and everything in between.

Good luck!!

Girls start menses when their bodies are ready to start. I've never heard that a girl will start the same age her mother did. I was 10, my daughter was 11 so there goes that theory right out the window. Every person on this planet is an individual and they grow and develop at their own paces. If you want to know more make an appointment with the doctor.

You really don't start at the age your mother did. I was almost sixteen when I started, and my mother was thirteen. My daughter was thirteen, and my sister was 16. So see, it doesn't matter. I guess it just depends on your own body's development. I didn't develop till pretty late, but my daughter started developing at about 12. So I would say to you, that if she's developing right now, it will probably be next year or the year after.

It varies for different girls. I just got my period last year, and I'm twelve. I developed enough for a bra when I was ten, too. Girls usually get their periods about (this is just what I've heard, and it was right for me) two years after they've started developing, and about one year after they start to get discharge. I mean, my friend has been getting her period since age eight, and I know girls who haven't gotten it yet. Give it time, but let her know what to do when her period comes. Now, my mom is always telling me too much than I want to know, but I'm glad, because I know more about it, and it's really fascinating. Just be sure to stay connected with her on these things, and help her, and whether she likes it or not, she'll be thankful. Oh, and there's really no need to take her to a doctor, just tell her yourself.

I started having to wear a bra when I was 8, I bloomed very early and they didn't quit growing until I was 21 now I am very well blessed and want a reduction. I started my period at 10, my mom did not get hers until she was 15. Each female is different, there are no 2 alike. She will develop at her bodys pace.

My daughter is the same way. i took her to the doctor for a physical and she was told it was all normal. I too didn't start til I was 13 but the doctor said that even though she has started to develop she might still not start her period til she is 12 or 13. I would say to take her in for a physical and talk with the doctor. Keep the communication open with your daughter along with keeping all those wonderful feminine products in stock just in case and to explain how they work to her.
Good Luck to you!

My daugher was wearing a sports/training bra in first grade...she had what my mom called little nibblets and I didn't want her being teased. My daugher started late (almost 13 yrs old) every person is different! She still gets mad at me..cause my period lasts 3 days total..and she has hers for a week! I started developing in 5th grade..and I'm big boobed..so...every person is built different and don't forget..she may have her dad's mother's side in her as well...find out when she started if she's alive and start getting ready to talk about that with her...

The average age for a girl to start her period is 12. They can grow for up to 2 years after they start their period, but usually do not grow a lot. They usually start filling out and getting pubic hair at about 11. Every child is different and all can grow at a different rate, but most likely your daughter will be done growing by 12. Don't worry, everything will be fine.

It sounds just like my daughter. She started wearing bras when she was 10 and she started to have that sweat smell from her underarms. She had to use Teen Spirit deodorant. I thought for sure she was getting her period like right after but she got it when she was 3 months shy of her 13th birthday. I was 2 months shy of my 13th. I guess it does follow the mothers pattern. These girls today seem to develop alot quicker than when I was a kid.

It sounds like she is starting to go through puberty but it is different with every girl when she will actually get her first period. The best thing that I can say is prepare her for what is gonna happen. Go ahead and introduce her to a sanitary pad. Also give her one to carry with her just in case she starts. Then tell her that when she does start her period no matter when to call you and you go get her no matter where she is or what you are doing and take her to lunch or shopping or a movie or something fun just the two of you. make her feel good about it and comfortable with it. It is a big time in a girls life to get her period and it shouldn't just be ignored. GOOD LUCK.
