Prawns are referred to the larger variety of the two. After eating in restaurants throughout the world, I must say that the size that differentiate the two will vary. Food wise they both are the same thing.
Enjoy.

Not sure, I used to think it was a size thing but then I heard of tiger shrimp. I now think maybe prawn is British and shrimp is American, because when I was in England I used to buy prawn cocktail chips, and in the rest of the world I seem to hear the word shrimp all the time.
