An AA sponser is someone who has been there and gotten though the hard times and wants to help others. The are there when the alcoholic wants to talk or when the alcoholic wants to drink. Who better to have on your side than someone who has made their life better and cares enough to spend their time helping others. Sometimes having someone in your corner makes all the difference in the world

They're the person who has been through it themselves so understand what you are feeling and going through but unlike a family member or friend they won't let you get away with lying or not following through on your obligations with your recovery. They're basically the one who you can call at 4am and ask to go for a coffee if you need to, or to kick you in the *** to get you motivated again if you start slipping.
