Well first of all, you should probably buy a magazine that has steps on a healthy diet. Start swimming, and if you don't know how to, learn, even as a teenager you can never be too late (I have this one friend, he's 18 and he still doesn't know how to swim, but if he gets over his fear of the water he's going to go learn). Swimming and cycling are two exercises that exercise the entire body (swimming mainly), and help the metabolism rate stay high for up to 3 days. Tell the teenager to eat healthy foods at moderate amounts every 4-5 hours. When you eat less, your metabolism slows down to conserve energy, but overeating will just backfire on you.

For what to eat, since the teenager is obese, well I'd say the best thing to do is to let them eat Subway, and if you're cooking, something hearty but healthy. You don't want to starve them, or make them eat less than 2000 calories, that's the worst situation. I'd have them exercise (I prefer swimming) and go on a 2500 calorie daily diet.

You could also do crunches and lift weights. 3-10 pound weights are fine. You should do 100 crunches and 100 reps a day, total. You could split it into 50 twice a day for each, or 33 three times a day with one extra the last time. You shouldn't split it more than up to two or three times because that just kills the whole point of a burn.

I was obese at one time, but over the last year have lost a lot of weight. I cut out all meat, eggs, and dairy, and focused on whole grains (try Ezekiel breads sprouted grain varieties), starches such as potatoes, and lots of fresh vegetables. If you prefer your vegetables cooked, steam them, don't boil. Fiber is very important to keep you full. Remember: when you are overweight, no fat is good for you in quantities of over 1 teaspoon a day. Once you reach your ideal weight, you can eat slightly more fats. Try reading "The McDougall Solution for Maximum Weight Loss." I have lost a ton of weight following this plan. Make sure to also do some cardio a few times a week. You don't need to do it every day.

Eat fruits and/or vegetables with every meal. Drink water and cut out sodas and unnatural juices. Stay away from fast food but you can have it if you stick to Kid's Meals. Just eat small portions (I recommend half a serving or even half that) and eat like 5 times a day so you won't get too hungry and pig out. Everything in moderation will help loads.

Only eat 1 time a day. At lunch. Replace breakfast and dinner with a 2 or less carb protein drink. If you get hungry chew on sugar free gum or go to the mall.

Whole grains, fresh (organic) fruits and veggies with antioxidants (pears, cherries, apples, bananas, raisins) plenty of water, if you eat meat make sure it is the lean variety. Eat more protein - milk, eggs, cheese, nuts, meat. It fills you up quicker than bread products or something like that. Avoid foods with high Trans Fat or Saturated Fat. Avoid pop and junk food. Water is really the best thing for you. It flushes out your system and quickens digestion.

Try salads and grilled chicken. Pretty much any grilled food is good for you because the fat is mostly cooked out. Also limit your portions during meals. It is better for your metabolism to eat smaller meals and have a healthy snack in between.

Subway, by far!

You get to choose your bread, hot or cold.

You have your choice of many fresh, healthy vegetables to go on top.

You get your serving of cheese as your dairy.

Your protein comes in many forms of meat.

Top it off with a change in sauces every day,

Plenty of food, a feast to the eyes, a selection to choose from every day, and last but not least add a cup of hot soup and you have a great taste to match a new found waist. (smile)

A salad of chopped vegetables with one ounce of diet dressing on the side. Dip the fork into the dressing, then spear the chopped vegetables.
I lost 40lbs in my senior year in high school by cutting out most carbs, increasing my exercise, and eating non-fat yogurt for breakfast and lunch.
