what do you think about public schools letting teachers dock points off of students grades if they dont have certain supplies for a class? let me be more specific
my nephew is in his 2nd year of spanish and in this class besides the normal basic supplies of pens papers and things like that, they have to subscribe to a spanish magazine that costs $15 for 2 issues. tomorrow will be the 1st day of the 2nd week of school and if they dont have the money for the subscription tomorrow, they get 10 points knocked off their grade. the next monday another 10, etc
my nephew luckily isnt one of these kids, but what about the kids that just dont have the money for things like that?
stuff like this really gets me wound up i dont think its fair
what about you?

i started to add my location when i post this but i will now.....this is in NW arkansas...15.00 will get 2 adults in to see a movie. i would say lol because i know in other parts of the country our price of living seems like a 3rd world country
i will say lol now
one other thing that made me mad was in one of his classes which is psychology (for 10th graders) 2 days a week the class is simulcast from little rock without a teacher present for that hour...........and they also have to have a home computer for this class or cant take it.
i know things change from when 'we were kids' but to me these things are just appalling.....
im wondering in 10 years what will it be like for my son who is in pre k this year.
to be honest it scares me.

I think that is absolutely terrible, besides if these kids pay for the issues...do the teachers actually think they are going to read them? I don't agree with them getting docked points at all. I am a financially challenge single parent of two small children, and I think that I would defiantly be in the school throwing a fit if my kids got docked because I couldn't afford their supplies. They should have an alternate way for the kids to get this particular supply. GRRR...It gets me wound up too.

First off, a lot of children are in families that just don't have enough money to provide them with extraneous school supplies.... So, to be docked points because of economicaldisadvantage that the kid THEMSELVES has no control over... it's just horrible, and downright unfair.
If anything, there should be Alternative methods of gaining access to this subscription... be it by having it available to check out at a library, or being able to use it after class to do assignments... this is what I would feel would help remedy this problem.
If the teacher is not offering ANY options, only that the subscription MUST be bought, I believe it should be be given weeks if not Months in advanced, to give any chance to poorer families to come up with money enough to buy it...
Though.. .from the looks of it, for a teacher even Able to require a 15 dollar purchase, it might be that it is econimcally feasable in the certain area of the school.

Hard to answer without some facts: Do the magazines come close to being worth 15 dollars? Are they two textbooks? How much time were you given to order them? Where you given any choices? Why wouldn't the teacher let children share? If answers sound like teacher is getting piece of the action it would annoy me even if 2 points weren't deducted. If teacher and school Board could give me reasonable answers wouldn't get to bent out of shape if we are talking about 100 point scale.

That isn't fair, especially considering some students may not be able to afford that. Talk to the teacher and explain on behalf of any students who may be under such circumstances. A lot of poor kids do not say anything about their economic situation because they've learnt that it's not a good thing to tell people about.

If I had a child in this situation, I would not really be too upset if I knew the magazine would be relied on for quite a bit of the course work. (There should be some sort of "safety net" for those kids whose families cannot afford to buy the magazines.)

i think providing learning material is the job of the school.
kids need to provide only the basic stuff.. pens n such.
Id tell the teacher to stuff it.
