My dog has been very very itchy for the past couple of weeks. About a week ago we put flea medicine on her, but it hasn't done anything to stop the scratching. Her skin appears normal and doesn't look dry or flaky or anything. She is mostly itchy on her head (ears and chin/mouth area) and on her paws. She scratches her ears so much they bleed. She doesn't have ear mites. Her ears seem fine. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with her? She's tearing herself up and we don't know what to do. If it is something we can fix ourselves, we would rather do that than take her to the vet and pay tons of money for something we could have done at home, but we will take her to the vet if necessary, of course. Any help is appreciated by both me and my itchy girl.

there are many reasons your dog can be itchy, but it usually are food allergies or contact dermatitis.
the dog can be allergic to the contents in its food or even one flea bite. contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction to anything including grass, leaves, certain household chemicals or etc. The best thing to do is to take to the vet and have allergy tests done in order to determine the cause. It can be expensive trying to determine the cause.

Usually the big cause of the chewing at the feet is food allergies, have u changed the dogs food lately??????
The website listed below just may help you determine what is wrong.

It could be a food allergy. I have a Dalmation that has an allergy to beef. He is only fed Lamb and Rice foods with no preservatives. I'd check the food that you're feeding her to see if it has a lot of by-products or corn in the first 5 ingredients. Dogs can not digest corn and some have allergies to corn. Some also have allergies to wheat. Generally the most non-allergic food is a good natural lamb and rice food. Best of luck to you.

It sounds like allergies. Both of my dogs have allergies and to different things. My pit is allergic to EVERYTHING from beef to grass. Of course he never gets beef and he does not usually go in the fields. My Lab has flea allergies he is on Evolution but when he is out hunting he gets bit. Both dogs by vet recommendation get Benedryl and get a bath in oatmeal shampoo. I do not want my dogs on meds all the time so absolutely no steroids and Benedryl whenever they have an out break.

She probably developed an allergy. You must take her to the vet so that she can get a shot. Scratches can lead to infection. We just had this problem and even on a sunday it was only a hundred bucks, including medications.

Question is too vague. How old is your dog? What kind of meds did you put on your dog? You say that your dogs ears are fine and then you say they are bleeding! Have you changed your dogs diet?
It could be:
Food allergy
Flea allergy-scratching continues after fleas have been killed.
Cheyletiella mange
Contact dermatits-maybe from the type of flea med. you used.

Too many whats-its. Take your dog to the vet. Check for low cost
vets or vet schools. Please don't let your dog suffer.

Flea meds (over the counter) are less than they might be. Try visiting PetCo either in person or online and looking into Frontline,

It isn't sold OTC, its an RX and it does a better job. In the meantime flea baths help.

I would definatly take her to the vet considering the flea medication didn't work. The problem could also be oily skin too. If the skin is too oily then it will itch and not be red. Try and give her a bath and see if that helps. Otherwise definatly take her to the vet if the bath doesn't work.
