A friend and I are arguing about a few things I have questions about. He gets on me about cussing. Sometimes a word or two will pop out, but it is NOT apart of my daily vocabulary. He tells me I should stop. I am trying, but sometimes it just slips out. He says he over came cussing and I should too. I told him we sin everyday. We aren't perfect as long as we live in this body, and in this world. To God, ALL sins are equal to him. There is no better or worse. He also says we should try to live like Jesus in a way that we are supposed to strive to live a perfect sinless life...like Jesus. I don't think that is right. We are sinners and we always will be. Of course, we should try not to sin, but we shouldn't try to stop sinning all together....I don't think God wants us to do that. What do you guys think? Please help...

I fear that if we all stop sinning at once, the universe would collapse in on itself. There would be this loud sucking noise and it would be all over. The reason we are here on earth is because we are sinners. Can you imagine all that goes on on the earth happening in heaven. Go ahead, try not to sin. You won't make it through one day without sinning. Because of this, we are saved by Jesus (dying for our sins) and given the tool of praying for forgiveness..

Where in the 10 Commandments does it say thou shall not cuss. It doesn't and it doesn't say a lot more. Sit down and read the ten Commandments sometime and see where you fall short. You will be surprised at your findings.
I'm not saying that cussing is the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do. You know what's right and wrong.
As long as we are in these fleshly bodies we are in a sinful nature and cannot approach the Father, but through Jesus Christ's Saving Blood we are presented to the Father as perfect just like Jesus.
I find it hard to commit sin. Yes, that's what I said. I don't go out and make sin a part of my life do you being a Christian.
No, I wake in the morning and thank God for loving me and giving me another opportunity to serve Him. I thank Him for allowing me to be one day closer to His Son's second coming and go on my way in service.
Where is the sin? Nowhere. Love Him, Serve Him, remember Jesus Christ's footstool. Hey, we got work to do.><>

The Bible tells us that God doesn't like filthy speech so we try to stop. I used to curse a lot but now I don't like to hear it. That was a change I had to make for myself. Remember Jesus died for all of our sins even before we committed them. The Bible tells us to try and live a sinless life. Of course we will never be sinless completely while we are here but if we try and live by a standard that follows Jesus's teaching then it should be a kinder and more pleasant environment. The only people that Jesus really irritated were the very religious ones. Ask God himself your questions and then look in his letter to you (the Bible) and see what he tells you. And don't take offense by your friend if he is truly concerned for you. But your relationship with Jesus belongs to you. It is very good, however, to read what he has to say about things.

I've heard that all sins are equal theory, and I really have to disagree there. Although I would say that since all sins are an offense to God, it is best to avoid them, no matter how small. It sounds like you have an unhealthy attachment to this particular sin, and you are stubbornly clinging to it. I am not sure why a Christian would do that, since it is OUR sins that Jesus died for. I hate every last sin that I have ever commited and I am really trying hard to give up my attachments to sin.
Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed by the impossibility of being perfectly sinless like Jesus. That is why Paul said ‘Be imitators of me – as I am of Christ.” It is helpful to study the lives of the saints and the heroic efforts they made to strive for that perfection. They are worthy of our emulation and are great examples of how ordinary sinners can be transformed by Christ's saving grace.

I think the next thing your friend needs to work on is being judgmental. He did not "overcome" cussing. He saw a benefit to not cussing, so he took an action. You don't see the same benefit, so you don't take the same action. It isn't about will power, so don't let him try to play superior. It's about a purpose, and you clearly don't see the same purpose.
I think God does intend for you not to sin, but realizes you are human. So he doesn't expect you to be perfect. Just to try to live the best life you can. What is more important is what you contribute, not just what you don't take away.
You should spend more time trying to contribute than worrying about whether you cuss once in a while. Priorities here.

I will disagree with you on just one point. We should be striving to become sinless, perfect. However, we should also realize that we won't achieve that status in this life. This does not mean that we try to justify our sins. It also does not mean that we give up on overcoming our sins. It means that we keep striving to overcome them and don't become discouraged and give up when we fall short.
Your specific situation reminds me of a man who was a leader in my Church around a century ago. His name was J. Golden Kimball. He had earned his living as a mule skinner before he was called into a full-time leadership position. Because of his background, J. Golden had a rather colorful vocabulary and his sermons were often sprinkled with profanity. After one such sermon, there were quite a few members who called for his excommunication. Upon hear about this, J. Golden is reported to have said, "They can't do that to me. I repent too damn fast." Note this was not a statement of arrogance on his part. It was a statement made in humility. He realized that he had a problem with swearing and spent most, if not all, of his life trying to over come it. So, don't give up. Keep working at it. Some day, with God's help, you will overcome it.

We aren't perfect the only perfect man was Jesus. As human we make mistakes. The goal is to become more Christ like. We should try to live like Jesus. But as I said we are not perfect that's why we come to Him and ask for forgiveness and to deliver us from whatever sin we're doing. I understand what you're going through when I got angry I did the same thing but I have learn that we need to be careful what comes out of our mouths. Cussing is just something you need to be delivered from, we all need deliverance from something. I hope this has helped.

Out of the mouth speaks the heart...somewhere in Psalms...I do have to say that you CAN stop sinning if that is what you desire. Paul said we must crucify the flesh and be "born-again". By that I mean, seeking God's will which is for us not to sin, reflect Christ's love, etc. Try thinking less about what you want, and more about what Jesus wants of you, and that will probably help. Just a thought, have you ever asked him to quit cussing for you? It sounds lame, but I bet it would work. Good luck.

If you are Christian, you should strive at all times to be sinless, knowing that you cannot. But by the that effort and grace, you can become a bit less sinful each day, and so on.
As far as the "all sins are equal", it just ain't so! Mostly the vary in terms of severity and your personal motivation.
Hit some body with your car because you weren't paying attention is bad, but aiming for them because you hate them is another story altogether!

you are both right. You are right in saying that we are all sinners but your friend is right that we need to try to live a sinless life like Jesus did. Now granted it may be impossible to live the sinless life but it is what all christians should strive for. Just because we have sinned is no excuse to just go on sinning and not worrying about it.
