It doesn't only act in one direction. Evolution doesn't act in any particular direction at all.
All "evolution" does is cause species to change in response to their environment.
In the case of humans, we don't become more ape-like because there's no benefit to doing so. Ever since pre-human apes moved on to the plains (and out of the jungles), it has always been to their advantage to be smarter and to work better together in groups. Thus, at the end of it all, you have humans.
It's possible we could one day go back to living in trees (should civilization collapse, or something). But hopefully we won't; humanity has great potential.
In fact, you might try reading the book "Evolution" by stephen baxter. It's a fictional account of human evolution, ending in just that sort of thing happening - civilization collapsing, and humans going back to living in forests.
This is the sort of question you should ask in the science section. Asking it in the religion section seems to indicate that you don't actually want to know the real answer to your question; you just want validation of your religious beliefs.

Evolution does not have a "Direction" The overall trend is towards more complex creatures, but that is entirely dependent on the conditions that said life form is living in. That is to say if the environment doesn't change neither does the life form.
You should read " The ancestors tale".
The problem with most of those who dispel evolution is that they either find it too difficultly to grasp, or haven't taken the time to do any real research.
News flash, learning should not end when you finish you formal education!

Well...yea. Evolution is pretty simple in context.
Essentially natural selection is an unforiving, ever pressing force that governs all life and how it acts. As this life progresses, because of genetic variation, natural selection begins to make changes based upon the effectiveness of the organism within its habitat.
Evolution doesn't make us monkeys because we don't need to be monkeys. It's pretty simple. There's no selective natural selection that is saying 'we need to be monkeys'.
This is also essentially why evolution was so slow. It took small, little steps by organisms doing things ever so slightly to cause change to happen.
For example, when apes first got out of the trees and onto land to walk, this applied selective natural pressures to adapt to something different. Obviously without proper bodily structure walking is too ineffective, you're not useful! A change in diet also, for example when we began to hunt and eat fish, would also begin to naturally select for new traits.
Complexities arise though when you start to ponder where we're going in the future; based on natural pressured created by technology and society. THe brain is still rapidly evolving! Hold on tight!

Evolution does not act in one direction. It acts in a variety of directions. Gregor Mendel was easily able to demonstrate that the offspring of a single pair of parents (peas, flies, etc) create a mix of genetic traits, some of which are sterile, others are different from both parents. While controlled breeding like this is not a true reflection of real life conditions, it offers insight into the nature of genetics.
Further, some people do use these principles in everyday life to breed superior animals. Animal Husbandry, including livestock and dogs, relies on isolating favorable traits or abilities, and insuring that future generations inherit them. Cows in today's society are far removed from cows from 5000 years ago, when they were first domesticated.

Because the strong survive, and the weak don't, to put it bluntly...
And, not only is it based on survival, those of us that are more apt to get a mate and make a child are those that have succeeded in passing on their genes...
Those whose genes don't get passed on are not going to have a representative of those genes in the next generation.
If girls were mostly attracted to short, stalky, and very hairy men, then it would be possible for us to become ape like... However, evolution is driven by the members of a species who have offspring. And, as I'm sure you can verify for yourself, there exists a consentual agreement among our species of what IS and what is NOT attractive to the opposite sex... Those that are more attractive, those that don't die off as quickly as others, those that are better SUITED to getting a mate will have their genes expressed in the next generation, and those genes will be better suited to mate as well...
All it is, is whether or not someone has their genes passed on... And, NATURALLY, the people whose genes DO get passed on, are the ones who are better suited to find a mate, and survive.
Someone who is really ugly and short and bald and fat, etc. basically someone who is UNattractive, will most likely NOT pass on their genes.
Then, the next generation of humans will only be from the people who were aptly suited enough to have made offspring... And that generation will have all inherited the good traits from their parents. And, then the cycle will continue. The ones of the next generation will have to face the same pressures when finding a mate. The people who conform more to the image of what is attracitve will be the ones who mate more often than the ones who don't.
This isn't crazy, it's simple logic...
The NEXT generation will consist of the genes that were good enough to have succeed in making offspring in THIS generation...

It's survival of the fittest. So humans are smarter than monkeys, right? It was a genetic defect that makes the first step, then if it's a good defect that the "defective" animal lives to reproduce and pass those "defective" genes on. There's no genetic advantage for us to get dumber and "change" to apes. Like the previous people answered, you really need to do some reading about evolution because you don't seem to know anything about it.

When God made the physical universe all the things in it just existed and had no souls. It wasn't until God let the souls that He made from his own body before the creation of the physical universe come in the physical universe to see it that some entered into physical form and became so enraptured with the sensations that they forgot where they came from and how to leave the physical form. That is what makes Evolution work in only one way upwards until the soul remembers its first home and father and can return to it.

Well first of all I am a christian so I don't believe anything i am about to say but....
Evolution is the prossess of an organism changing in order to better suit the enviroment it lives in. According to evolution we did not come from apes rather apes and humans came from the same ansestor. when this ansestor migrated to different enviroments it changed based on that enviroment.

Actually evolution happens with the soul. Soul passes through different bodies, plants, animals, humans. And this can happen in both directions. We can elevate ourselves or degrade ourselves, depends on our actions. If we live like pigs or dogs we will become pig or dog in our next life, even though now we are human.

It's kind of hard to propagate a gene that gets one killed. Those creatures kind of aren't around to reproduce, so that stupid gene mutation that dropped them back a rung will not be passed on.
That doesn't require anyone to direct operations as the genes themselves weed themselves out.
