With the modern technologies of today, we have tried to make the procedure as uncomfortable as possiable. The dentist should offer you a local anesthesia, which will help during the procedure, and some pain killers afterwards. I have heard reports of people being very sore, to minimally sore, (depending of the progression of the disease, and lapse between past treatments) You will do fine, the pain can be controlled with meds.

Gum surgery isn't that pianful but they give you some shots that really don't heart that much to numb your gums. But after that all you feel is a small sting every once and a while.

I had it and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I was sore for a day, but not unbearable, and I healed really quickly.

Yes. Your whole mouth and jaws will be swollen.. And you'll have cotton balls in there to soak up blood.. But some will still drip down ur throat anyways... Its a big mess.
