It is possible, and lawyers will fight for compensation based on brain damage occasioned through use of suction delivery (at least in the US where litigation is King)

How it is medically judged and legally proven I have no idea. You certainly need to investigate the possibility professionally. To my mind it seems murky ground. Take my first daughter, for example. During the birth process the nurse was repeatedly unable to properly detect critical life signs and there was some obvious 'behind the scenes' discussions between doctors and nurses. Nothing was said to me about it and the birth proceeded normally, though it was protracted. Then after my daughter came out there was a gasp from one of the doctors and murmurings from the others around my wife. Turns out my daughter had a knot in her umbilical cord, which is unusual and could cause oxygen deprivation or death.

Oxygen deprivation = brain damage, obviously, so I was really concerned about how my daughter would develop.

I was with my wife when both our children were born, so I got to see the delivery (which given the nature of birth not even the mother gets to see). To my medically untrained eyes the final few minutes of delivery look pretty violent, the baby’s head is manhandled, pulled and twisted with what I would call serious force.

Now, for me, the actual outcome is my daughter was not developmentally challenged at all, quite the reverse actually, but had she been a ‘slow’ learner I would have been putting it down to her difficult delivery.

My daughter was born with the aid of suction and has no problems. In fact, she's extremely intelligent.

You need to remember that all children develop at different rates. If you're really concerned, see a pediatrician. They can tell you much better. They might refer your son for testing, which will give you exact answers.

Good luck!!

It may be nothing to worry about. You can always try a developmental pediatrician and see what they say. I my son is 2 yrs old and does not crawl, sit or walk. He has cerebral palsy. And my 3 month old actually does more than him. My 2 year old is in therapy too. if you find out he is delayed depending on what state yo are in there are therapists that will help him. I hope I helped!

I've never heard of that before. But I'd like to recommend that you start by taking your son to a Developmental Pediatrician to see if he can lead you in the right direction. You might be referred to a Neurologist to make sure there's nothing wrong and to rule out anything. I wish I could've helped you more. GOOD LUCK and I hope you find some answers for your son.

My last son (#3) was pulled out by suction and he has no development delays. Have you talked to your pediatrician? He may be able to have your son tested or refer you to someone who can and they can test for many different things.

No, my nephew was delivered by suction and he is extremely bright. He is a straight A student.

My sister was sucked out, and she has no problems. (other than the typical teenager stuff) Not all children develop at the same rate.
