Cake bible says 2 layer, 6, 9, and 12 feed 150.
Wilton says something entirely different. How do you determine what is right.

I use 6, 8, 10, and 12 with the pillars that go completely through the cake on the bottom. This way it can be transported without an accident. The 6 inch is saved for the first anniversary and should be frozen and then wrapped in several layers of plastic wrap then put in a box and kept frozen. Of course this is done after the event.
This will feed 150 but if you are in doubt you can always serve a sheet cake on the side.
Wilton is the wedding pro and you should listen or you won't have enough cake to feed everyone. They even have diagrams for cutting the cake to feed everyone.

It depends on how large a size you want to serve. If you want the cake for your main dessert than 6, 9, and 12 should be perfect. If you just want small samples for everyone then go for a 6, 8, and 10. I find that I generally disagree with Wilton on serving amounts. Cake Bible is a better source.

I always go 4" apart on my tiers. Keep in mind that when Wilton figures total amount on their wedding cakes in the Yearbook, they DO NOT include the top tier as most couples like to keep that tier for their first anniversary. If you definitely want to stick with 3 tiers, I would recommend 8, 12, 16 x 2" round. That will serve 156 not including the top tier.

umm...i think the six inch, nine inch and twele is right or you could order two sheet cakes and a designed cake...one for out front that might feed the bride and groom. and the sheet cake in kitchen to sever for everyone else.
