Drink Plenty of Fluids
One of the goals of preventive therapy is to keep your urine as dilute as possible. This helps to keep the substances that could potentially form a kidney stone, including calcium and oxalate, moving quickly through your urinary tract.
Try to drink at least two quarts (12 cups) of fluids a day. Water is best, although juice and other beverages can add to the total. Limit your intake of caffeine-containing beverages like coffee, tea, and cola to one or two cups a day, since caffeine acts as a diuretic, causing your body to lose fluids too quickly.
A good gauge of whether or not you are drinking enough fluids is urine color. Except for the first thing in the morning—when urine tends to be more concentrated—it should be pale in color. If your urine is dark yellow, that's an indication to drink more fluids.
If you are hesitant to drink too much during the day because you have a bladder control problem, discuss this concern with your doctor.
Points to remember:
Drink at least 12 cups of fluids each day
Limit your intake of caffeinated beverages
Your urine should be pale in color

Kidney infection pain is caused by the infected kidney (usually only one kidney gets infected at a time) becoming swollen, and stretching the outer lining of the kidney (called the capsule). People usually feel this as a pain on the side (flank), sometimes towards the back. Although kidney stone pain can be very similar, some people feel it more towards the front of body: in the lower abdomen, and occasionally towards the groin. Why? Despite the name "kidney stones", stones usually don't cause pain when they are still in the kidneys. Often, it is when the stones begin to move towards the bladder, and get stuck in the ureters (thin tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder) that pain occurs. Although it is possible for kidney infections to go away on its own, you should not count on it. The reasons are three-fold: 1. Kidney infections often begin as a simple bladder infection (or "lower urinary tract infection"). At this stage, people usually have the symptom of needing to pee frequently. This is the body's attempt to flush the infection out and preventing it from spreading to the kidney. So if the kidney still gets infected, it would suggest that this infection is not one that would go away easily. 2. Kidney infections sometimes happen because the person has kidney stones, and those stones got infected. Our body's immune system cannot fight infection on the stones, so the infection may never go away without treatment. 3. When a kidney is infected, there is a high chance for the infection to spread into the bloodstream and the rest of the body, causing septicemia. (Often, people start to have fever and chills at this stage.) People can get deathly ill with septicemia, so you would want to get a kidney infection treated before this happens. How long does the pain last? With the proper antibiotics, kidney infection pain should begin to improve after 24-48 hours. With kidney stones, it depends on how fast the stuck stone passes. Obviously, if the stone is big, it may not pass naturally, and you'll need to see an urologist to have it removed (or broken up into smaller pieces which can then pass naturally). Hope I answered your questions!

drink cran apple. cran berry is better for this but tastes crappy.
drink it a couple times a day. And DO drink a lot of water and you probably won't have kidney infections. The coke is really bad for your kidneys. Same problem here. DID you know that coke cleans old crusty stains off of the toilet rim? Imagine what it does to the lining of your stomach! Quit drinking that. Get Rock Star or Red Bull or better yet, genuine Japanese Green Tea. That stuff will keep you going and you can drink juice and water the rest of the day. Jack LaLanes juicer with power juice recipe will rev you up till you don't care about coffee or coke anymore and you will be nourished.

I'm 23 and I also keep getting kidney infections and UTI. My prayers go out to you hon, I know how fed up with them you already are. I've tried drinking lots of liquids per day but alas I still get them regardless. I have to say, I don't drink a lot of water which people have told me thats why I keep getting the infections. I dunno if there is any truth to that or not. I just cant stand water it makes me wanna barf. The majority of kidney infections usually make their apperance after sex, which can lead to them yes.
But from personal expirance I have to tell you about this nifty little product I've found. Its called URISTAT (sp) and it is great. Its pills that I take when I can feel a kidney infection coming on (burning frequent urination etc), you can get them at Walmart which is usually where I get them but i'm sure they are available other places. If you can't find them ask, I dont know why but they are usually near the condoms. Take 2 pills as directed when you feel the signs of an infection and make sure to drink lots of liquid that day. Within 2 or 3 days its gone. You also may want to know they will change color of your urine so if your pee is yellow or orange when taking these that is normal. These pills are godsent, they really do work! And they take away the pain the bladder spasms and the other nasty crap that occurs when you have an infection! I would say that if your still hurting after 4 days or its getting worse then bring on the antibodics but personally since I've found these pills I havent had to get on antibodics. Good luck!

I had the same problem! DRINK WATER! and go on webmd.com for a list of foods to cut down on too. There are kidney stones caused by vitamin C also, but that's not your problem. If you need caffeine change to Monster and Red Bull. ~this info is what I do~

I have had many stones and been to specialist. Drink lots of water and pray you don't have anymore. There really is nothing you can or cannot do to prevent them. If you are a stone former then you are going to make them out of something.

Thankyou for your question. It reminded me to drink more water. I'm on topamax and a diuretic. Both medications promote kidney stones, especially topamax. The label says my doctor is suppose to keep a careful watch for kidney stones. How do they do that?

always always always drink plenty of water, water flushes out the toxins in your kidneys wich prevents infection, also stones are a build up of uric acid in the body wich can be caused by too high an intake of calcium, which also causes gout. the best thing you can do for yourself is drink plenty of water. you should be urinating 4-5 times daily
