Asides from the fact that he looks like Emperor Palpatine minus the dark cloak and red lightsaber???
Seriously though... Pope Benedict XVI (or Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became Pope) did serve as a German soldier in World War II, but by all accounts he was just a regular soldier in the Heer (Army), he wasnt involved with the infamous Waffen-SS (the SS forces who have tanks) or even the regular SS which was responsible for executing the Holocaust.
Before he became Pope he was also the head of the Office for the Doctrine of the Faith (which is essentially the moderated version of the Inquisition) under Pope John Paul II...
Thats about all I know about his life before becoming Pope...

He is a great man, the Vicar of Christ, and our Holy Father. He was a priest, and led by the Holy Spirit, rose through the Holy Church. He's a great man, and trusted advisor of JP2, and is full of wisdom.
Despite some protestant beliefs, he was not a nazi. He was drafted into the GERMAN army, and like a lot of others, he deserted the army when he found out what was going on.

He's from Germany and a former Hitler Youth. He's Catholic and he's now the Pope. That's all I know.
