we are thinking about getting another dog. we already have a 3 year old golden retriever and 4 children ages 7-14. We have a good sized house and yard. The yard is partially fenced but a dog would be able to get away easily. We want a medium-large sized dog that is friendly and easy to train. Preferably somewhat active and some shedding is fine. Basically a good family dog

Contrary to popular belief, if well socialized, Dobermans are WONDERFUL!!!! They are good with kids, and fine with strangers if shown they are okay. However, if needed, will protect your family with their life. However, they do need to know that YOU are in charge. Once you have that covered, they are extremely affectionate, loyal, and obedient. They are also not overly active like a lab, although they are up for a good exercise session at any time. Check them out. If you dont think that they are the breed for you, then go to Yahoo! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Whatever you do, dont go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder. Happy Hunting!!!!

When our kids were small we had collies. The "lassie" kind, not border collies. They were absolutely loving and sweet. Because of the coat they do require maintenance, however. Labs make great pets, but if you get a puppy it takes a long time for them to outgrow puppyhood. We found our current dog, a 12-pound poodle, at the local shelter. Another terrific dog. If your golden is a male, you might want to get a female of whatever breed you choose. And of course get your new pet spayed or neutered. I have seen a number of "retired" racing greyhounds that seem like pretty good dogs. Good luck with the new famliy member!

A border collie is a great dog for a family with kids. They need lots of attention and exercise and playing with the kids could provide all of that. They love to play frisbee, flyball, etc. Great dogs for an active family.

go to your local animal shelter and adopt a great dog ..they have many looking for homes ... I adopted a medium sized German shepherd mix when she was 6 weeks old and she was the best dog I have ever owned .. died at 19 .. Never a day passed that I was sorry I had her .... you will be happy all around with this decision

A German Shephard...great guard dog and awesome with children. If you don't want to spend too much, you can get a mix- we got a German Shephard mixed with a Border Collie, and he is GREAT! He was like $80. And always consider going to a shelter...those animals need your love!

Trust me in these words as i have a Labrador.

Presa Canarios... They're friendly, easy to train, active, and protective.

:) hehe

No, but seriously, go for a lab or golden mix! They make the best, friendliest dogs.

I would get another Golden. I had 2. I love them. A labrador is also another good dog. I would also advise you to go to your local shelter or humane society.
