Get a lhasa apso...I have one and she is the sweetest little thing. She just lays there and lets you do whatever you want to her. I have a bunch of little cousins(one is 3) who come over and treat her like a baby doll. They will get out all her clothes and dress her up and get out hair bows and put them ALL over her while she just lays there. Also its not like she is just old...she is only 2. She is not your typical yappy little dog but when you want her to play she is ready:) Also she has the cutest personality ever! Lhasas are like having a living teddy bear.

Good luck:)

I dont think that a 4 year old child should have a toy dog because toy dogs are very delicate. I would reccommend a larger toy dog like a Jack Russel or a Cocker Spaniel. I wish you and your daughter the best in finding a companion.

I do not recommend poodles or chihuahuas for small children but calmer dogs or high energy but not nervous dogs work well with small children so my recommendations would be:
Shih Tzus
Pa pillions
Pekingese
Pomeranian
or a small mix breed from your local shelter where they might have an idea on temperament.
Another place to look would be local rescues.

I agree that toy dogs are not the best for preschoolers, but if you get one that is a little larger than the norm, they could work out okay. The tiny ones are just so fragile.

Maybe a shi tzu or westie...even better, a mutt from the shelter. You definitely don't want a delicate little dog that a child can easily hurt. I would recommend something more medium-sized than small!

miniature breeds are okay for children, but DEFINITELY no toy dogs! the smallest bump could seriously injure it. they require great care that a 4 yr old just can't give. pomeranians, pekingese, chihuahuas, mini dachsunds/schnauzer, maltese...these are all better choices. how bout a pug?

maybe a terrier type. They have lots of energy and love kids. You should start with a younger dog though, so that way he or she can adapt to your family.
