The freemasons are generally not a bunch of criminals.
They work to do good in their communities.
However they do some things that are contrary to Biblical principals, especially swearing of oaths (See Matt 5:33-34).
There are lots of references to freemasons at the most senior levels being involved with some occult worship. Alfred Pike that reformed the freemasons was a Satanic priest. Of course, freemasons deny this assertion. The question and evidence remain, and so do the denials.
Freemasons did do much of the ground work for creating this nation (George Washington, Ben Franklin, many others).
Lower order masons are not recipient to all the facts about freemasonry, but "mysteries" are revealed to them as they attain higher levels. That bodes ill, but who can say, since it is "secret."
I'd wonder exactly why anyone would join such an organization...to me, commitment to Christ should be enough.

To be blunt, YES! The masons are a secret society, the higher up you go with them the more secretive things become, and the more you learn the more you must remain quiet!
They operate with a cultish mentality the same as many destructive organisations do. I guarantee if you start asking too many probing questions they will soon have you out the door.
I strongly suggest that you do some reading up on psychological manipulation,"mind control" as it is otherwise known. I also suggest if you do decide to learn about mind control that you do not tell your husband until you know how to deal with this.
In the meantime dont question him but simply give him your unconditional love. I strongly recommend two books , listed below. Plus an informative website from a professional cult counsellor. Good luck.

Jake: You should do some research on your own and ask yourself why you even considered asking this question.
Consider this: How long have you known your husband and is his decision to join a surprise or a lingering debate? Does he or yourself come from a family of Freemasons? What and or who influenced his decision to join?
Don't worry just research and ask more questions, educate yourself. Don't join the Eastern Star too quickly, (you wouldn't join any group, without understanding who they were first would you?). If you feel that freemasonry is right for your husband and decide after educating yourself that the Eastern Star is right for you....then go for it!

Some of the most brilliant men in history were freemasons. They are a Christian society, and they give many men the feeling of brotherhood and closeness to likeminded people that our society generally lacks. I have a friend who is 101 years old and has been a freemason most of his life, and he says that the freemason teachings are about things like being honest and honorable in thought and word and deed. They're a little conservative politically (and I'm not), but I would say that from what I know masons are very good citizens.

I think it's just a silly boys' club. It's like the adult version of the treehouse with a "No Girls Allowed" sign out front. The history of the Free Masons is fully of intrigue and mystery, but it also includes some of the greatest (male) minds of the world. I wouldn't worry about it unless you see a drastic personality change or destructive behavior.

No. And wow people can be so ignorant. In order to belong to the masons you have to believe in the one true living God. Anyway if you are really concerned join the Eastern Stars which is the female version and see what it is all about for yourself.

Well, you should be worried that he's joined an organization that believes in secret knowledge that can only be learned by a system of works and oathes.

No, it's basically a fraternal order. You might look into joining the Eastern Star as well, or reading some of their literature to get an idea what they're about.

No. Look in to what the Free-Masons are all about. They are definitely not baby killers or anything like that. It is basically like the Elks Lodge or any other fraternal organization. Their ceremonies may look strange. But they do not worship satan or anything like that.
