I started out with 1/2 dozen or so different kinds. Your baby will end up liking a certain bottle (nipple). Then you should buy a bunch of the kind he/she likes. Don't buy many of the small ones. They will outgrow those. They start drinking more than 6-8oz quickly. I really don't see the need for more than 6.

About six 4 oz size bottles and eight 8oz bottles. You could just buy the playtex bottles and then use the liners. They reduce the air in the bottle and you can throw the liner away. Whatever you are most comfortable with.

A good dozen should do. You might want to make sure they are all by the same manufacturer though, so you don't have to go out and constantly buy replacement parts. If you really want to be prepared, buy some extra bottle nipples in the varying flows. . .

if you use standard bottles about 6, 4 oz ones and about 8-12 8 oz ones.
if you use Playtex ones (the ones with the liners) you need on 8 oz and one 4 oz and a lot of refill liners!
if you are going to breast feed i would have about 8 4 oz bottles handy for you to pump into. (refrigerate and dad or granma can serve later while you take a nap)

Gosh, I wouldn't even know a number to give you. Lets just say that I had enough to fill one whole cabinet top and bottom shelf. You can never have too many.
