George Gershwin and his nrother Ira (both Jewish settlers in NYC) wrote many famous musical compositions in the early 1900's including the Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, The 5 1/2 hour long opera Porgy and Bess and a string of pop songs considered standards of the genre today, like Let's Call the Whole Thing Off (you say potato, I say po-tato... you know.)

He turned jazz into "high art" by writing serious orchestral music that used our fun american rhythms and vibrant melodies and spawned an entire revoloution in musical thinking... You need only to listen to Frank Sinatra (not frank himself, but the band backing him) or any american musical to hear his influence.

He is one of the greatest American composers ever.

If so, he is a famous music composer and has written numerous songs for older movies.
I myself have enjoyed every one of them.
