You know what? I have thought about this a gazillion times.
Bottom line is this.
Christian prayers in school? Then ALL religions get they're rituals as well. Is it better to teach your child what you want them to know as opposed to, all the different teachings they will see?
To live in a Free society and Free will and a God given choice, prayer in schools, really is wrong. Why? We live in a secular society. God knows this. This whole plan was HIS idea to begin with. Will schools get more corrupt and violent? Absolutely yes, hands down.
How can this help a life as a Christian? 2 ways. It will, or at least should, make a Christian family closer and more informed with God's teachings than ever before. If a Christian family is not taught this at home, why not?
If a Christian family wants prayer, there is Christian schools for it.
I wish there was nothing but Christian schools or Christian teachings in all public schools. But we can't do that. WHY? What did we just do? We just turned schools into a semi-church. We can't do that. unbelievers, atheists, agnostics, pay the same school tax as I do. They pay taxes that should fulfill they're wish also. This is still earth. This is NOT heaven. Not yet. OUR time is coming. We are not to make this heaven. If we were, Jesus would not return. There would be no need.
Get your children in check with the Word of God, and live a happy life through Christ and await His return.
That is what we are told to do. We were never told to "change" the world, not the people in it. We were told to "tell" them about the "change", not do it for them.
Great Question.

In a diversely ethnic area where people may have many different religions that could be a problem. And how would you fit that time into the day since public schooling says that learning has to take up so many minutes by law. Would you agree to tack on an additional half hour so that the children could have prayer sessions worked out. Plus busing schedules would then become a nightmare as most small towns use the same buses for different schools on alternate schedules. For small children the school day is long enough as it is. If you have a school that carries people with a great number of religious backgrounds that is nearly impossible.
Would you teach a Hindu the bible against their will? Or the child of an atheist? Somehow I hardly think that is fair do you?
Leave prayer where it belongs and that is outside of school. You want to do it in a public park, fine, you want to do it in a restaurant before you eat, fine. Leave it home, leave it in church. If you really need prayer in school then send to a private religious school or home-school.
Public school is for education in the basics we need to keep functioning as a society; they have a hard enough time teaching that they don't need anything else additional.

People can pray anywhere they want to. But, when children are in public school, which is a common ground where people of all faiths can be together in peace, children need to spend their time learning about the real world. The problems in the world today all stem from ignorance and magical-thinking. Somewhere, sometime, we humans must attend to real problems and real understanding. It's like volunteering in a dire emergency to help fill sandbags to hold back a flooding river. And, just as a Red Cross worker is quickly trying to show the volunteers, of all faiths, how to make the sandbags and what the system will be for working together to save the village, someone demands that everyone stop and read the Bible for twenty minutes together. Or, worse. There is a fatalism in many faiths that says, "Our fate is in God's hands. We are doomed. There is nothing we can do except pray. And, besides, the Rapture has begun and Armegeddon is upon us". No. That is madness. Does your faith breed madness, sir? It will not win out if it is mad. With the problems and world-wide mess that we are leaving for our grandchildren, we must not waste public school time. Any faith that gives people the idea that they are too "special" to participate in group problem-solving and the labors of keeping a village safe and healthy for ALL, are spiritually sick. Personally, I would rather that people like that not be around other people's children in the public school system. Stay home and pray and stay out of the way of the real goodness that is the real purpose of public education.

In my opinion,NOOOO !!!
To bigen with, this question worthes apriciation and discusion. A very siriouse one !!! !!!!
[1] If children [or any student,worker..etc., in or around an inistitutioanalized ...] are allowed to have specetial area to say prayers, every 'faithfull' [irrespective of different religions], would try [obviosely,I beleive] to "be" comitted & dedicatted to stay out of class [ to rate themeselves that they are better ] "'SAYING his or her prayers".... [2] It would disturb the right of the non-beleiver. [3] " Worshiping ", would sound mechanical. [4]Though it is 100% true that schools are corner stones for [childern] any kind of betterment, we should not allow schools to be breeding grounds [seed beds] for extrimisem. [5]...last but not least, let's stop condeming the contemporary kids by exagurating the previous status of Bible taught 'better off' or "....." taught kids etc, when we don't have any stastical or moral evidences. I don't think "Yesterday was better than today". BUT, I strongly beilive that today is good but tomorrow will be better !!! [6]Ooops, I forgot to mention the impact and influence of'" teachers" on ....as they are part of the MASS ORGANIZATION .

I think that a few minutes of silence is the best way to go. The old days won't work. There's simply too many religions out there. I mean, Christians can't even agree on which version of the bible is best, how in the world would we even begin to agree on what to teach and how to teach it. I do think that putting aside a few minutes of silence for those who wish to pray or meditate or whatever would be the best way and also I think that it couldn't hurt anyone. You have to remember that when you introduce religion into any setting that can be interpreted by anyone that you really have to know that that person believes as you do. For example, my family is Catholic. My mother and her sister were in catechism and my grandfather came to class to get them. The nun was still talking. My mom and my aunt turned around to see their father in the doorway and the nun said "Turn around, God is not behind you, he's in front of you." my grandfather said to her, "God is everywhere". They never attended that class again. Even if someone has the same religion, sometimes their belief differs, you see, and what you need to ask yourself is whether or not you want that to be an issue.

Nobody is preventing you from praying in school. You have the right to pray. You have the right to bring a bible to school to study. You have the right to form religious groups and pray with other students.
Just don't use the public schools funds and resources to do it. I am a christian, but I would not want any of my teachers forcing prayer down my throat.
Anyways, prayer is suppose to be meant in private between you and god. Prayer is not some public display for you to show how righteous you are compared to everyone else. Uhhh, remember the pharasees?

Public worship is for Churches, not for the place where tax payers fund buildings. If they want to pay rent for the place on days when school is not in session, there's no reason to prevent any community group from helping pay building expenses, so long as they get no special assistance. If they want their kids to meet before school at a local church for a prayer session, go for it. But not during the school day on school property. There's way too little time in the school day to impart all the education needed as it is.

Kids have never been disallowed from praying in school. I recall several times praying to god in the middle of class and at lunch etc.
The real argument is that some christians want prayer to be scheduled and in this light "school prayer" as it has come to be known is not a good idea as our constitution deems it not only permissible to practice our religion but not to ever be required to conform to another's religion.

I don't and I'm religious.
You want the Mormons or Catholics or Muslims teaching your kids THEIR WAY!
Tomorrow we'll send Mormons to your kids school and teach them it's OK have more than One Wife.
They'll also introduce them to the Latter Day Saints.
Then we'll distribute Rosarays out to all the kids and teach them prayers for hte Virgin Mary.
Then at 10 am and 2 pm they can bow the Mecca 10 times.
Maybe we should do that
I'm in FAVOR of that.
EVERY religion should be introduced.
Buddist, Shik, Hindu, Jew, Muslim, White Southern Baptist, White Northern Baptist, Black Baptist, PEntacostal, Mormon, Christian Science, lets' not forget Mary Baker Eddy and the latest to be Baptized by the Tax Courts, Scientology!
We'll bring in those meters and put them on all the kids fingers and maybe Tom Cruise will show up and tell them how EVIL Psychiatry is!
Then there is Atheist Day, where a Guest Atheist comes in and tries to break everyone's belief system with FACTS.
Then they're is AGNOSTIC day, when the Scientists come in with DNA and Charles Darwin!
Then we can all go do STations at the Cross.
But first we have to Speak in Tounges
And then we have to let the Jesuits purge the Demons out of you that are doing all those tounges!
DO YOU GET THE POINT!
Seventh Day Adventists DON'T BELIEVE IN HELL
They believe Saturday is Sunday, not Sunday.
The JEws and Muslims AGREE WITH THEM
Do you get the point!
The world does not revolve around YOUR religion.
You you will NOT get EVERY religion in the world to agree on a single prayer.
So let's change all the money and the pledge to
On Nation, Under ALLAH
Do you get the point.
JESUS said, except for adutery there can be no DIVORCE, how do you explain THAT one to Protestant kids who mommy has her fourth husband!
Now, Kids, given the choice, will LOVE being JEWISH
You get to DRINK WINE regularly at age 13 (12 if you are a girl)!
At EVERY Jewish ceremony there is WINE and once you are "of age" you are allowed to drink it!
Now, given THAT choice, how many kids will stay Catholic, Pentacostal, PResbyterian or Methodist!
Be a Jew and you can Party and Drink Wine in Junior High School at all the relgious ceramonies!
Let's take a vote, what religion do we want at our middle school!!!!
And it's legal. The LAW has to expempt you, because you are a RELIGON!
Serving minors WIne at Religious ceramonies is NOT a crime in ANY STATE of the US!
Do you get the point.
And remember, I'm religious!
Indians, American INdians are allowed to chew PEYOTE at their religious ceremonies!
It is LEGAL.
Now kids, let's vote.
We can become Catholics and let the PReist drink the wine.
We can become Methodists and drink Grape Juice
We can become JEws and DRINK WINE AT AGE 13 (12 if you are a girl).
We can become AMERICAN INDIANS do chew PEYTOE BUTTONS LEGALLY at all our ceremonies!
What religion do YOU want to be, boys and girls. Go tell your PARENTS you are excerising FREE WILL and CHOSE as an American to be.... Whatever you want!
GET THE POINT!

They stopped prayer in school and the day the columbine high shootings took place prayer returned in the school, I'm not saying make everyone pray that don't want too but being this is a free country I think the ones who want to should have some time to do so. Is it so bad to pray where it should be stopped? I don't think so.
