It really depends dramatically on where you go. The vast majority of colleges and universities in the US require a buttload of things other than what you want to study, but there are a few that don't. These are mostly trade schools, or junior colleges.

By way of example, I attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire as a biology/economics double major, but Dartmouth requires a literature course, a "quantitative and deductive science" course (math), a "thought, meaning, and value" course (religion or philosophy), a "technical and applied science" course (generally engineering for non-majors), 2 social analysis courses, and 2 science courses. On top of this, most majors have other bizarre requirements of their own (like Dartmouth's economics major requiring Environmental Studies 1).

It should be two years. that is assuming you are coming out of it with only an associates degree. 48 credits is about 11 classes, which is 3 classes per a semester. Though, you could also be finished in 1 1/2 years if you take 4 classes a semester.

Yes, you do need to take the basic requirements (your Core classes). You should be able to go online to the schools website and pull up what your requirements are. Keep a copy of this throughout your time in school and keep track of what youve taken and have to take still. Good luck!

Quit now before you get you and your family in to serious debt. If you really wanted to be in college, you would have paid attention. Chances are that your only going to college because you've been told all of your life that after graduation, that's what you have to do and secondly, it's to party. My advice to you is to think about what you want, not what your parents want. Oh, about your councilor, once you commited to college, that's primarily what all they cared about. Why? Because your school gets funding based on how many students they get enrolled in to higher education. On top of that, it makes them look good and they can demand a higher salary. One thing you'll eventually learn in life is that when you get right down to it, everyone is out for themselves regardless of what you think or believe. This may not be the answer to your question, but it's the answer to the question that you should have asked. Why the Heck am I going to college?

Oh, one more thing. If you didn't care enough about school when you were in it to pay attention, what makes you think that your going to like to pay for it in college.

In college, they set a curriculum of what you need to do to graduate. There are usually 2 different sets of curriculum:
1) College criteria of classes you need to take such as math, reading, social science, etc.
2) Classes you need to take to fulfill your major.

Some of your classes will fulfill both these criteria, but I believe only certain amount of classes are allowed to do so (such as maximum of 2 classes)

Yes, you HAVE to take general education (basics) classes in addition to courses in your chosen field of study.
