in Matthew 8:14
When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.

This clearly proves that Peter has a wife and is married because he has a mother-in-law.

catholics acknowledge St. Peter as their first pope, but St. Peter was married, but their popes and priest are not allowed to married. that is why many catholic priest are rebelling against their doctrines.

Priests weren't prohibited from getting married until the 800's.Previously, they were allowed to marry, but were discouraged from doing so.The ban on marriage came about to elevate a clergy's stature in society.

It proves Peter had a wife, although it doesn't necessarily imply Peter's wife was still alive when Peter became an apostle. In those days alot of people died young. Your mother in law is still your mother in law, even if your spouse has died. So for all we know, Peter might have been a celibate widower when he met Jesus.

Even if Peter's wife was still alive, I don't see why this is a problem. Celibacy is not a set in stone rule, it can change. There are married priests in the Catholic Church - they are in the Eastern Rite. Western Rite (Roman Catholic) priests do not get married. This could change in the future, but this is how it is now. I don't see why some non-Catholics have such a problem with celibacy. Jesus was celibate and there is plenty of scriptural support to commend the practice.

I would be bad to have a mother-in-law and not have a wife. Yes Peter had a wife at one time. Also Mary had other children beside Jesus It just the fact that Jesus was the first born. The man had not to do with the Lord Jesus Christ being born but Mary was not sinless. The sin nature come from the man. Romans 5: 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Matthew 1: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS. Matthew 13: 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? Matthew 13: 56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

My bible says his wife's mother. New King James
So its pretty plain.
The teaching of the Catholic church is that Simon Peter is the first pope but they can't prove it!
Most likely Simon Magus written about in Acts 8:9 is the true 1st pope.

He had a Mother in Law. So obviously a wife.

He was also the first Pope of the Holy Catholic Church. Martyred in Rome. He was the Bishop of the early church in Rome, and was not reffered to as a Pope, until the 2nd century. Pope is latin meaning Father. Apostolic succession, or church leadership succession is very biblical, was widely accepted until Luther came along.

Peter was cleary given the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and leadership of the church in Matt 16:18-19. Peter was also spoken of in scripture far more than any other disciple of our Lord.

Protestant Christians believe that Peter had a wife. They also believe that he was a great apostle of Jesus who dedicated his life to Christ! He preached the gospel and many thousands upon thousands of people got saved.
What Protestant Christians do not believe is that Peter was the first Pope!

Peter is shown to be a married man, and at least in later years, his wife apparently accompanied him on his missions (or some of them), as did the wives of others of the apostles. (1Co 9:5) His mother-in-law lived in his home, one he shared with his brother Andrew. Mr 1:29-31.

Keep in mind the current Catholic Religion was changed drastically by the Roman government. Who imposed many of their laws and doctrines onto the religion. So what was kosher for the pope in Christ time isn't necessarily Kosher now.

Most of the early church leaders were married. Paul wrote that a Bishop must have a wife. The notion of priestly celebacy come much later.
