I’ve done a bit of work with fund raising. One of the things that happens is groups ask the wrong question. They ask, “What can we do to make money?”

The question you really want to ask is: "Given this group of people, what are we really good at? How can we make money with those assets?”

Anyway, It’s something to think about.

Here's a unique fundraiser that really works (at least, it works the first time you try it - don't try to do this every year!)

Use willing participants only - allow the option to decline.

Start with a sum of money, which you give to each person. You can give each person the same set amount , or you can let each choose how much to take.
With a sum of the church's money in their care - each person is given the instructions - to - Go and Multiply it.
Your people should be given the understanding to "use their talents" to multiply the money in their trust. They can do whatever is not illegal, immoral, or sinful, to "multiply" the sum of money in their care.
(you will find that many will have creative ideas - some will bank the money in an interest bearing account, some will invest it, some will buy ingredients to bake a cake for sale, some will buy supplies and create a work of art for sale -- many ideas will emerge).

At the end of a predetermined time - you have an -ingathering- service. People will present what they have done. (example: I took $5.00, i bring back $25.00; I took $10.00, I bring back $ 100.00).

You need to allow time for people to increase their trust. This won't work if the span is one week, or one month. Allow six months or a year. - if you need the funds quickly - please allow at least a couple of months for this effort. The longer the program runs, the more money it can potentially raise, more than a year would be overkill, however. (people who increase their money quickly have now, more funds to use to increase further.)

Precede this program with a sermon, or other teaching on the parable of the talents. Also have a sermon or teaching on this same scripture at the service where the increase is presented.

People will be excited and energized by the uniqueness of this effort, but it is work. It does work well - but No-one will be excited to do it twice.

I know this may sound crazy but have you tried hire a helper for the day? It seems to be a growing fund raiser. You can use your pre teens and teens to go help clean out garages, attics, gardening, lawn care etc, and use your older patrons for repairs (homes, cars) or even house work , laundry, baby sitting, It takes a few hours from each of you but well worth it PLUS you are doing a favor for alot of people who DON'T have alot of money for just such help. You could also put up some flyers in your Elderly communities for a Rent - A- Child day. Have you asked the congregation if they have anything they would like to donate and have a Yard sale, that you can have in your chuch parking lot. If any of you like baking they seem to go REAL fast at just such events. You can have a carnival where you have face paintings, hot dogs, maybe a petting Zoo, clowns and charge a small admission. That seems to ALSO help out with people who don't have alot of money and would like to spend time with their families, have you thought of having movie and dinner nights for families for an admission you can fix spaghetti (very cheap) and hot bread while showing a movie (try a pg comedy (thats the highest rating I would go)and you know the movie and dinner night can be done a couple times a month. OR if any of your congragation has skills they would be willing to pass down they could give some classes for a small sum or even find some people who would be willing to give tutoring (its that time again and there again your also helping a child in need) There are so many possabilities. Good Luck Oh and don't forget the popular girls and boys (not at the same time unless your church can divide them) sleepovers, ask for 5 - 10 dollars perchild (discount it for multiple child families like say 2 for $7) to come to the church for an evening of fun and games and a sleepover. Again good luck to you!!! I forgot to mention shopping for elderlies or shopping for mothers! any way try one a couple or several of these and you should be able to raise money in no time!!

I am so sorry that these people are suggesting such! Last week, the nursing home where I work did a stuffed baked potato supper. We sold tickets for $5.00 each. We all pitched in to provide soft drinks, desserts, toppings, and labor. Our dietary department ordered the potatoes. People volunteered to wash and wrap them; The potatoes were prepared in our kitchen, but you may have to seek volunteers unless you have a commercial kitchen. People can choose their toppings and go through a serving line. This was enough profit to buy an expensive piece of equipment and purchase Christmas gifts for the residents at the nursing home. The whole community was very supportive.

Try G2Bay. This is a social networking site where people help each other make and save money. People post their photos, blogs, news, product and service reviews and talk about the stocks they own. Every user gets a Million Dollar Page where advertisers pay to find the right customers. The more hits you get on your page, the more money advertisers will give you. You can specify why you need the money and people can either donate it or buy ads on your Million Dollar page.

We did a bake auction for funds for a mission trip to Mexico. We hired a real auctioneer and had church members bale goodies. We also have people donate things for a silent auction Like use of their Tahoe cabin for a week and family portraits by photographer member of our church... we made about 5,000!

We've done car washes, but instead of having people pay to have their cars washed, we made it free with an optional donation and then had the kids get sponsor's per car like people would pledge $1.00 or 50 cents per car, they always raised good amounts of money!

Our Knights of Columbus council just did a fund raiser to help local counseling groups that aid pregnant mothers who might otherwise get an abortion. We handed out baby bottles to all our parishioners and asked for a donation. They put their donation in the bottles and turned them back into the church, which will then give the money to the counselors.

Quite simple really. Why dont you all get rid of some items you no longer need and have a garage sale? Our Anglican church is about to do this, and where we live these sales have been succesful in the past with the community.
Happy fundraising!

You might consider a 50/50 raffle. Things are nice, but it's amazing how much a group can raise offering half the collected pot as the prize. Our activity team at work was strapped for cash until they came up with that one.
