You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their father's wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation. (Exodus 20:4-5 NAB)

Do you have pictures of your loved ones?

Statues and pictures of people we love are not idols.

Statues and paintings of Jesus and the saints are just like pictures of the people we love and respect.

The King James Version of the Bible states in Exodus 20:4: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth"

Why were the Jews commanded not to make graven images? Graven images were the standard method of pagan worship. They were representations of false gods.

This is a very clear command. However God commanded the Jews in Exodus 25:18, "And thou shalt make two cherubims of gold, of beaten work shalt thou make them" and in 1 Kings chapter 7 Solomon made bulls and other images out of precious metals.

It seems obvious that the Jews did not worship the cherubims and Solomon did not worship the bulls he had made. These images did not violate the command of God. Therefore, an image not made for worship is acceptable.

How can a statue of our Lord Jesus Christ dead on the cross be considered an idol to a false god? A crucifix is the message of the Gospel without words held up for all to see, a visual reminder of the sacrifice of Jesus, no different from a painting, a play, or a movie.

Catholics do not worship statues but the almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

With love in Christ.

I have no use for a jealous god and one that would punish innocent children for something they had nothing to do with. That is one of the reasons I don't get the worshipping of this god. Also, people like you make it look even more offensive.
Danny H is one of the few people that gets what I try to explain to people about statues and such! They are not being worshipped, just representative. Thank you!

Well, I'm Pagan...but you said specifically "Infidel" Pagans. Since Infidel means unfaithful and I am very faithful I'm out of that category. Hmm...nope...don't hate any Gods either. Woah...I'm a long way from Catholic!

Disregard..this wasn't addressed to me.

p.s. Is the last part of that verse true? Does your God really punish people generations away from the person who transgressed? That's wrong, don't you think?

You talkin' to me?
By the looks of you, I would say you worship Beer and Football. I think I've seen you before on TV, in the stands with a fuzzy wig, orange body paint, a big 'B' on your belly, screaming at the camera. Cheering for a bunch of spoiled millionaires is idol worship too.

Please pray to God and devote yourself to Him. He could not make comments the way that you are.

For the record, I am Catholic and I do not worship idols or images. We have them in our churches because they are beautiful, ornate reminders of our loved ones that are in heaven, like the saints, and our Blessed Mother. Having a statue in church is no different that if we'd have a painting or other picture on the wall. They are just reminders, just like the pictures of your loved ones (wife, kids, siblings, etc.) are reminders. You don't worship your pictures, and I don't worship the statues. I worship God and God alone. If I ask the Blessed Mother to pray for me, it's no different then if you ask a friend or relative to pray for you.

God bless.

How on earth did you manage to link Infidel Pagans, God-Haters, and Catholics all together?
Interesting.

In what form of insanity do you group infidel, pagans and God haters with Catholics? Or, is it sheer ignorance and prejudice that causes this lapse of clarity?
