Only ONE lesson?!? Ouch! That's hard! I'd say: (the biblical) Love one another as you love yourself -- in other words, be with other people the way you want them to be with you.

Treat others as you would like to be treated. It covers everything..love, respect, compassion. If you want others to treat you with respect, love, etc., you have to treat them the same way.
