I've seen this term used many times in responses made in Y!A in the religion section. The term strikes me as an oxymoron. Is it?

A false God? Is what it sounds like. Example, someone who thinks there a God or THE God but there not. A Idal cow. Booda. Anything that is not, THE one and only God.

It's a Christian term for anything that takes the place of their God. For example if something is more important that God in their lives such as sports it is said that that person worships sports and thus creates a false god to worship...

It's when someone makes a "god" out of something that isn't really a God... it's whatever you worship that isn't a God

A false god is anyone or anything that you turn to instead of the god of your religion.

Ex: I'm Christian, if I get upset and overeat or light up a cigarette to release stress instead of talking to God about it I have turned to a false god. Or if I pray to a god of another religion I would be praying to a false god in the eyes of my God.

Anything that you treasure on earth above God is considered a false god.

Hope that helps.

A false god is any material object or human or supernatural being that has been attributed as a deity but is not actually the One True God (Jehovah Jireh El Shaddai)

to devilsadvocate: it has nothing to do with Bible "thumping". Unfortunately, you must have had a negative experience with Christianity, and I am sorry for that. We do not live up to the standards set forth in the Bible. A false god is something other than the One, True, Living God, Jesus Christ. The other so called "gods" are false. The bible says that there should be no other gods before Him.

The One True God is the God worshipped by the Founders of world religions and their true believers. False believers also worship 'false gods', idols, images.
"False gods" are the 'gods' fabricated and idolized by men. There are thousands of such 'gods' worshipped throughout the world, which keep men back in superstitions, prejudices and conflicts of all sorts.
In order to serve in the building of the Kingdom of God on earth, each one of us has to learn anew about the One True God and live the life as He commands.

Every one that isn't the true one. To know the true one, read the Bible. The biggest false god in the church today is music, but materialism is a close second, and education is right up there too. Fashions a big one as well.
