Long story short. My grandfather needs to live with us or next to us for the care he needs. We have a small home right now but have property to build on about 150 miles away that would give us the space that we need. How do I approach this with him? I am the only one that he can rely on and other living arrangements would be too expensive for him to live in. Is there a better way to handle this...I would rather not buy another home when we have somewhere to build.
Thanks for your time!

This is a hard decision for your grandfather to make. I'm sure he hates to admit that he is at the time in his life that he needs help. No one likes to give up their independence. But there comes a time when they just have to realize its time Bless you for caring. Its time to sit down in person and have the talk with him. Tell him how much you love him and want whats best for him.
Oten they realize that yes they need the help but they do not want to be a burden. let him know he won't be but that you would feel better with him livng woth you. Could you add a bedroom and bathroom on to your existing house? That would be cheaper for you. Good luck with your grandfather..

Yeah, bad plan. What hapens, you'll spend a lot of time and energy, maybe money, making this transition, but about the time you get it all set up, it won't be enough, and he'll need more care than you can give.

Meanwhile you'll be worn out and maybe broke.

Sure, you want to be the one to provide the care, but I'd look a little further down the raod and start making THOSE preparations.

Been there, done that, seen it a lot.

What do you think he would do if that was you?
Sometimes, it just seems difficult and when you
start to take the time to care for him, you'll be glad
you did. Talk to your community health nurse and
get some ideas on how you can make this work.
There are a number of obtions you'll be able to
do. Some research in your area for long term aid
for seniors could also be a good support.

If your house is on a large piece of property (or fairly large) you can build an extra added room. Not that hard. Or just make room in your own house. The options are endless. You just need to put your mind to it, in the end, it will all work out. Hope it helps. Bye. Luv/Kodi

My grandfather passed away a few months ago, but I had moved my family into my grandparents home. My grandma is still around and pretty healthy. But if yor grandpa is getting to where he needs help, you should take on whatever extra stresses to enjoy the time that you have left with him, no matter where it is at.

Times like this are sensitive. Im sure its going to be hard on him to realize that he is at a point where he needs more help, and even hard on you to have to take over the responsibility for his care. Sit him down and talk to him about it. Explain to him your plans and how it would be helpful to him and enable you to give him the care that he needs.

Find a rental that you can afford or assistant living would take the strain off.

Do what you need to do. I'm sure he will appreciate whatever you can do to help him.
