Yes. Lose fat by doing cardio, such as walking, bicycling, or jumping rope, as well as eating low calorie foods such as fruits and veggies. Bulk up by lifting weights and eating lots of protein. Put them together by doing cardio one day, and lifting weights the next (or, you can do cardio everyday, but you have to wait a day in between lifting or you'll never get more muscle). Also, eat meals with lean meat and fuits and veggies. A great dinner would be chicken or fish with broccoli and baked sweet potato. For a quick lunch, a salad topped with grilled chicken and a piece of whole wheat toast for a couple well-deserved carbs! If you're into dessert, get into fresh fruit. You can even top some fruits such as berries or peaches with a little whipped cream for an extra treat! Good luck!

NO! in no way is muscle mass gain the same as loosing weight. They are usually a bifactor of each other. your friends are right, if you bulk up on calories and work out more, you muscle mass will increase, but using the muscles around said fat will burn it off. So try to gain muscle, and as an added bonus you will loose that "extra tire."

I was told at the YMCA that I could do cardio every day, but they recommended doing weights only every other day, as weight lifting caused a buildup of lactic acid.
Regarding the diet: If you have access to the services of a registered dietitian through your HMO, this might be a good question for a registered dietitian.

sure, it's called exercising. eat healthy foods, cut out unneccessary sugars, and just work out. if you burn calories, you'll lose weight, and gain muscle. if you want to be a bodybuilder, that's a different story, but if you're just trying to get fit then the two things go together well. there's no need to starve yourself, and no need to gorge yourself.

Muscle weighs more than fat - that's why a lot of people get discouraged if they diet and look at the scales.
It will all come together, just have patience.
