Is there a pill or something that I can give him? I just don't like the smell of the collar. I know that there are shampoos but I don't think they would last as long as a collar in same cases if your dog gets over active some week or if you can't get to him right away. Anyone able to help?

Sentry (made by sergeants) makes one of those liquid tube type flea controls called natural defense. It's the kind you spread on their back once a month. We put it on our dog and it smells great, plus it's all natural so it's probably better for the dog. It has peppermint, cinnamon and lemongrass oils in it so it smells nice.

We just got a dog and put it on her 2 weeks ago. No ticks or fleas yet and we live in a woodsy area.

And this same brand makes other flea stuff like powders too.

There are pills. It is called Program they're flavored tabs that the dogs will normally gobble right down like a treat. You give them once a month much like the topical preventions mentioned above.

If you are also worried about ticks Program does not help. Advantage also does not help with ticks.

Frontline, Frontline Plus(a more waterproof version of frontline) and K9 Advantix are topicals that are effective for fleas and ticks. Revolution is a newer topical.

There are tons of topical medications out there but the only ones I would currently recommend would be Advantage/k9 advantix and Frontline/Frontline plus. Depending on your needs of course.

Frontline works well too....and it last for over a month. Get it from your vet or order from PetMed Express. Just follow the instructions on the box.

Flea collars don't work very well and they can be harmful to your dog's skin.

The posters above are correct! Go to your vet and request some topical flea medication such as Frontline and Advantage.

You can try putting a little bit of vinager in it's water. we used to that with our horses to get rid of flys and it helped. we put about 1/2 cup in 25 gallon tank so you'll have to figure out how much to use and don't worry it won't hurt your dog i use on mine and they've never had any problems.

There are topical medications that are absorbed through the skin that kill fleas for approximately thirty days.

Yes - see your vet - I can't remember what it is called but your vet can prescribe it and your dog takes it once a month.
