I think maybe you should talk to him about it. Sometimes friends get lonely and give each other a little ego boost here and there to make themselves still feel wanted and loved. That's cool as long as your both okay with it. That's the "nothing more nothing less" approach.
It depends on how you feel and if you have feelings for him or just enjoy the friendship and flirting around once in a while.

Talk to him and see where you both want to go with the friendship.

It depends on how the breakup went. If he broke it off with you, chances are better than not that he is just looking for a sleeping buddy. If you broke it off with him, there's a chance that he wants to give it another try... or he just wants a sleeping buddy. I dunno, hard to tell without knowing the guy personally. So I'm just going on what I know as a guy myself. For the most part when we are all over our ex's, we want someone to sleep with. Hate to break it to you, and alot of guys are gonna disagree, but it's true.

sounds like you are his in case of emergency break glass. don't be so available. if you broke up, he shouldn't suddenly be all over you. have some self-respect and tell him that you're friends only, not friends with benefits. ask him what's up.
