I think my cat has tapeworms. When the tapeworms first come out do they move and are they approx. 1/2 in long and then get smaller and like a grain of rice?

Your cat definitely has tapeworms. What you are seeing are segments of the tapeworm itself. The only way for them to get these worms are by digesting a flea that has eaten eggs. Get rid of the fleas and get Droncit from your Vet. Depending upon the weigh, under ten pounds they get one pill. Over ten pounds, they get 1 1/2 pills. Some Vet's recommend repeating the medication in three weeks. If you let this problem go without getting rid of them, it will cause the cat to become very, very sick and will cost you more in the longrun, than the little pill, so please get one for your cat.

While you are at it, perhaps take a specimen (stool) in to be checked for roundworms and other types. It would require a different method of elimination.

Your cat definatley has tapeworms. My cat had tapeworms before. It isnt really a big deal. You should stop at your vets and get some tapeworm pills. You should tapeworm every 1-3 months to prevent your cat from getting it again. I use Cestex for my cats. It works like a charm. Just be aware by not treating this your cat can get very sick because the tapeworms take up all of the nutrition from the food. I would also reccommend roundworming your cat every month with an OTC brand of wormer. You really cant find an effective tapewormer OTC. I order mine over the internet from Australia because you do not use a prescreption. I hope that you will do the right thing and worm your cat every month for roundworms and tapeworms. Also you should probably take your cat to the vet and talk to your vet about de-wormers. Thank You

What you see in a cat's bedding with tapeworms is the dead segments that the cat excretes and they are like grains of rice. They don't move. You can get one Droncit pill from your vet and that will get rid of the tapeworm. Don't use over the counter medications. Too easy to overdose, they don't work and you do more harm than good.

If you allow your cat to harbor fleas he can just be infected again.

Those don't sound like tapeworms; with tapeworms you generally get segments in the feces. They could be roundworms.

In any case, your vet can prescribe a worming pill for your cat. Bring in a stool sample for identification. I'd suggest taking care of this soon--it *is* possible to catch these parasites from your cat, not to mention that your cat is probably suffering a loss of energy and nutrition due to the worms.

Yep, that would be tapeworms. Call the vet. There is medication, a one dose pill that costs like $20-30...and it knocks it out for good.

Yes. your vet can give you a couple small pills to get rid of it.(fairly inexpensive) And yes thats what they look like they are like an off-white color and die shortly after exiting the cats butt. Keep the litter box extra clean when your cat is sick like that. Cats often get this from fleas so check the cat and get it treated for those too for prevention!
