We are having exactly the same debate now as the one in 1986 ... Reagan got his amnesty with the sweetener that the borders would be secured, benefits would only be given if you could show citizenship, and companies who hired illegal aliens would be punished ... the 1986 amnesty would be the amnesty that solved all problems ... yeah right ... we have had other, smaller, amnesties since 1986, but that one was the biggie .... so, the amnesty to solve all problems left us with, guess what? A porous border, welfare fraud and companies who hire illegals willy nilly .... and instead of a few million illegals, we now have anything from 12 -30 million, nobody even knows the correct figure ....
So, do I think amnesty would encourage further illegal immigration? Well, based in past history, I should say so!! It will go on and on and on .... this government COULD solve the problem, but they have decided not to ... Eisenhower could do it, he had the will ... Bush could do it, but he doesn't have the will ....

It is estimated that a third of the illegals here today are family of those amnestied in 1986. There is a cap on how many family based residencies there are, and they ignored it. If there is an amnesty, there would have to be loss of residency and deportation to anyone who sheltered an illegal thereafter, as well. Bringing additional family would be catastrophic, given the numbers already here.

Yes..if one gets amnesty. other illegals will come and they will wait until 10 million are here again, and they'll get amnesty, then another new batch of illegals will come hoping to get amnesty in 20 years are so, and it will turn into a neverending cycle.
Exactly like how it happened before..People got amnesty..More illegals came, and now their here begging for amnesty again. It didn't solve anything the first couple of times, what will make it work this time? It only encourages more illegals to come here, and protest in the streets and hope for amnesty.

Miss Zoe, Daddy is only caring about one amnesty. Are there more?
Daddy says that amnesty encourages lawlessness and heartbreak.
I don't need any more heartbreak.

Absolutely, without a doubt.
It rewards and does not punish. It creates an incentive where one should not exist.
