Nirvana is an ancient word. In Theravada scriptures, which are the most ancient, nirvana means the same as enlightenment. Sometimes you also find this in the Zen tradition (and Chinese Buddhism in general) because although Chinese Buddhism is Mahayana, its roots are also very ancient. However, in later Mahayana as it developed in India, enlightenment is a more advanced experience than nirvana. It's developed after nirvana - it follows on from nirvana. (So you can see that "nirvana" doesn't refer to an experience that happens only at death! There is life after the experience of nirvana, but now the person is not an "ordinary" person; he or she is re an Arya being, a Bodhisattva on the path to full enlightenment.)
The endless cycle of life and death is a flux that can only be stopped by enlightenment, according to Buddhists. Enlightenment leads to Nirvana which means the end of all craving, the achievement of perfect non-attachment and of happiness. Nirvana is not a place or a heaven, it is a state of mind that is available to all living beings in this life. It is a way of living and being in the world that is free of suffering and rich in wisdom, happiness and compassion.

Nirvana means "blowing out the candel" in the ancient Indian tongue, and is the final step of enlightenment. It happens when, after a person has chiseled down their ego to a tiny shard it is finally eradicated completely. Once this happens the person is empty of emotions and desires and will never be brought back from this world. Usually people reach enlightenment right before death but some, such as Bodhidarhma, Rinzai, and other great masters have the compassion and extraordinary will power to stay behind and help others that are suffering and become Bodhisatva.

Nirvana is the state of ultimate enlightenment. Enlightenment is the realization that conditioned and physical existences are causes of suffering for which one has the knowledge to remove that nature of suffering. When you attained Nirvana, the compassionate nature becomes fully developed, and it is this nature that propels us to continue to want to liberate others to attain and achieve this same blissful nature of existence that is the True Self. Through expedient means we manifests in physical forms as are appropriate to assist others in the journey of discovering thier Ultimate being.
