The easiest way to freshen your cupboards would be to repaint them, or strip and stain them. You could think about adding some sort of texture to the surface. You can make inexpensive curtains or shades for your windows. Add a fun cookie jar or vase with flowers for color. Get rid of old mismatched dishtowels and splurge on a new set. For your clutter problem, go room by room, and pick out possessions you can part with. Have a friend assist you in sorting through the closet. They may be able to say honestly that you haven't worn that thing in three years, and it's never going to fit again, or it never looked that good on you to start with. Take stuff to a thrift store the same day, or you will find yourself second-guessing what you give up. Check out target or walmart for cheap closet and under bed organizers. This will help cut down on the clutter too.

First, get that clutter out! Either sell it, donate it, or toss it. It's not doing you any good. You can get a set of vacuumable storage bags to flatten the things you do need to store. Make sure you're using those upper shelves (keep a small footstool handy).
Consider removing the doors from at least some of your cabinets altogether. You can arrange the best looking stuff there and it will force you to keep from overstuffing it.
My mom used to cover our old cabinets with Contact paper, it looked pretty bad then, but maybe they've gotten better in the ensuing years. You could also try attaching corkboard or thin metal to some or all of the cabinet doors.

You don't say what your budget is, I looked into refacing once and found that if I hung the cabinets myself, it was cheaper to get new ones...and that is what I did.
If you go to I am not sure which, either Lowe's or Home Depot, but they have some pretty nice cabinets that are in the store for a very reasonable price, You, a strong guy, a level and an electric drill are pretty much the tools you need.
Look into it.
Of course you can always paint your cabinets yourself. That is an option.

You can buy shelf liner paper to recover your cabinets. Many assortments to choose from and also very cheap for a few rolls of it. It is self adhesive paper, so it is very easy to apply. Any mistakes can be covered easily. Paint a darker color on your wall bottoms just to chair rail height. Paint the top portion a lighter color and get a wallpaper border to paste on right at the top of the line of the darker color. A facelift for a fraction of the cost.
Go through your clothes and get rid of the ones you don't wear or want anymore. By having a yardsale and selling the items you don't want or need, you will be killing two birds with one stone. Getting organized and earning money to buy a new shower stall for your bathroom. They are very easy to install with some liquid nails and some shower and bathtub caulk. Adding a new shower curtain, rugs, towels and a new paint job will make your bathroom look new again.

Invest in those Joy Mangano hanger systems. They will help streamline your closet. Take a good hard look at your wardrobe and donate anything you haven't worn for two years or longer. Time for tuff Love!!
I'd consider painting the cabinets in the kitchen or, if they are still in good shape, consider adding molding in white to change the look and some new hardware. Use accessories to bring in color.
For the bathroom, use your favorite flower for inspiration and color. Do NOT "flowerize" your bathroom, just choose a color, coordinate with towels and rugs, and choose a few simple accessories and maybe a flower in a vase on a windowsill or tucked in a corner of your vanity. A small lamp on your bathroom counter is a nice, warm touch. You can also do this in your kitchen for an OH! surprise.
I did my bathroom in peach but it wasn't too feminine with strong graphic prints for my walls and striped towels. I tied back the white curtains with peach silk roses on satin ribbon for a "feminine" touch, and that was all!!!

Well as far as the kitchen cabinets go paint is always the anwser if you are on a tight budget. Just make sure you do the proper prep like cleaning with TSP, sanding and priming and you should be very pleased with the results. Well it sounds like you should minimize your wardrobe. But if that isn't something you want to do try going to home depot or the container store and getting some closet organizers.

You could buy that paint-able wallpaper, which is thick with an assortment of designs, and patterns and cut it according to your door size for each cupboard, and choose your own colour of pain. If you think that would be too great a drastic change, make yourself a template and use that same type of wallpaper but make frames around each door, buy the door nobs that will compliment your colour scheme and or design, and presto, a new view, created by you. Good luck! Thanks for asking.

Sanding and painting cabinets is an option. Buy new handles & pulls so they at least seem new to you. Cheap contact paper inside could help. Get rid of any clothes you haven't worn in 6 mos.
