You couldn't stand water hot enough to kill germs, so cold is fine. Plain soap is fine too, because it's the friction and rinsing that removes most of the germs. Plain soap, cold water, and a hand sanitizer containing alcohol afterward would be my recommendation.

antibacterial soap has been proven to be no better at killing germs and bacteria than using regular soap. Germs and bacteria are more likely to be found in warm water. Cold water suppresses them from living in that environment.

Same reason you don't want to drink warm tap water, especially if you drink it from the shower head.

it's still effective, but the hot water has a better chance of killing more germs than cold water...just like cooking food. if you leave meat cold...there's more bacteria than if you cook it...same rule applies for washing your hands. but it really doesn't matter much when it comes down to it in the end

How effective does it need to be??? If you are doing surgery, then do the hot water. Cooking food = hot water. Getting newspaper ink off your fingers = cold water.
