It will really help you if you get some form of therapy if it is affecting your self esteem. It is nothing to be ashamed of; we all have angst of some sort. Some of us just hide it better than others!
Remember a few simple rules for dealing with cats.
They speak cat! I know that sounds simplistic but they don't think or react the same way as us.
Your first reaction is to blink and turn your face away from cat.
In cat speak that is saying " Hey I am your friend!" You need to bite the bullet and stare it down making your eyes wider as you do it.
You will find it very empowering! The cat may freeze for a few seconds, but if you move forward it will either submit ( look away from you) or turn tail and run.
Also don't wear black if you are going somewhere where they have cats.
They are born blind and they associate black with their mother's feeding them, so are attracted to black.
I hope that this helps a bit and do go and ask for help there are too many cats around for you to have an easy life otherwise.
Good Luck.

I love all cats, but i know you can't help being afraid. All i can say is they are the most lovely creatures ever. I HAVE AN IDEA!!! Maybe you should get a cat as a pet? If you learn to love that one, which you will because you'll get to know it, you'll be able to love all other cats. Maybe you should just take a trip to a cattery, face your fear. or while your at the cattery, ask for an old shy timid cat. Maybe try a white one? Or you could go to a friends house where there is a cat and see if you could get to know that one. Try some of the suggested, do what ever you feel you can do.....

FACE YOUR FEARS!!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise you'll regret it!!!!!!

Dont be shy, embarassed or ashamed of the feeling you have about cats. People are not fearless.
Dogs, cats, horses etc can connect to our unconsious thoughts+ sense anxiety in people. Cats were the 1st animals to become domesticated pets. As far back as 3000bc with the Ancient Egyptians, cats feature alongside 'witches'+ are behind mystical tales + folklore.
Dont worry 2much about it, but if u do,you should ask at your gp' .

There are a lot of people who don't like an exact kind of animal, I think it's okay. You have to worry about it in that case if it makes your life different - for example, not leaving the flat if you see a cat outside.
I think it's in our guts, some people don't like spiders, some don't like reptiles, some don't like cats. Anyway, if it is really not a "serious" thing with you, (like the example above) you could try to befriend cats - visit friends who has, ask them to let you play with them, etc. Cats are really friendly, you don't have to worry about them. And there are a lot of types, so maybe you could find one that you'll like...

It's probably just a psychological thing. There are many ways to overcome this problem. one way is to start slow and just try to stand near a cat(don't try with a black one yet!). once you can stand near a cat, now try to walk towards them. And when you feel that you're ready, try to give them a pat. =)

everyones afraid of something. its human nature. but black cats are just a differant color than white cats and stuff. as far as superstitions go, this is one of the worst. someone was just really dumb & unlucky themselves!!!! it had nothing to do with the cat. lol.

no really though find someone with a relaxed cat.
spend as much time as u need with it. youll be fine i swear!

plus i own a black kitten

I was really afraid of dogs for most of my life. When I became a shelter volunteer I learned how to handle them and get over my fear.

I do like cats better than dogs and I am still leery of strange, unleashed dogs who approach me.

It might be good if you go to a SPCA shelter and look at some cats. Have some who likes cats come with you and help you. Just hold them and play with them (With someones help).
