We live a very material life. The philospophy,I believe of Opus dei is for us to see a little pain to feel the need for spiritualism.
Extreme grief (Psychological pain) or disease (Physical pain) leads us to believe more.
I am not a christian, but this is my rationalization of Opus Dei behavior

In a world that worships sex, drugs, money and rock 'n roll, we could use a lot more corporal mortification.
The Vatican certainly understands this, in light of the whole revelation of God.
Ask any Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine drill sergeant about the benefits of corporal mortification.
They may not call it the same thing, but they will tell you it's the quickest way to train out old habits and instill new ones.
Does it seem perverted? Only if you're ignorant!

While there are always strange and sick people that enjoy and do many things, no this is not an official catholic practice and no nothing in this catholic hate site is true about the church.
they rate up there with the Chick publications on thier lies about the Catholic Church.
So why you wish to be fooled or worst pass along incorrect info on the church on purpose you should learn and know the truth.
I am sorry you have beleived such lies.

Because there is nothing wrong with Corporal Mortification if it is done properly and in a safe manner. Fasting is a form of Corporal Mortification. Corporal Mortification can help develop discipline and fortitude and help prepare oneself for suffering.

Power and wealth.
Always the way of the Vatican. Just look at European history. Who financed many of Europe's wars? The Vatican! They had to retain their power and wealth.
Who benefitted most from the conquering of Latin American, the Phillipines, etc, etc? Answer, yep, you've guessed it, the Vatican.
Power and wealth corrupts at all levels.

Why did Pope John Paul 2 say Israel wasn't a nation?
Do you see the mentality?
The only Sacrifice needed now that Jesus has come, is Worship! But, it DOES take fasting to take on powerful DEMONS!!
