You're muscles aren't used to the exercise. It should only stay sore 2-3 days.

3 days is normal. It's usually worst on the 2nd and 3rd day. You may be slightly sore after that, but not extremely. If you are still extremely sore after 5 days you might have over done it and torn something. Take a break from that muscle group until it feels better.

24-48 hours at the most, if it's more than this, you are pushing your body beyond it's ability to effectively repair itself.
