Well, I think we have to pick apart this idea of "by nature" first.

1. What does it mean for something to be in our nature?

Here's the thing about human nature: we assume that "human nature" is anything that's "biological", as opposed to being socialized into us - but socialization is actually a biological mechanism! In other words, part of animal nature involves socializing rules about monogamy or polygamy. As you probably know, different tribes and cultures (and species!) have come up with different rules - but the idea of creating rules itself is very natural.

2. Who does polygamy benefit?

It's important to note that in our ancient biology, it would have made sense for males to have more partners, so that they could spread their genes via tons of kids, and it would also make sense for females to want their partner to only be devoted to them (so that each female would be guaranteed long-term, exclusive support for her babies).

However, most people who know this theory (it's called sociobiology, and suggests that we do things to pass on our genes) don't think of additional factors which also have evidence.

For example, that females would *also* want multiple partners, in order to have more babies to spread their own genes - and that males (especially in the animal kingdom!) don't like the females to have multiple partners, because that could mean they would unknowingly be providing for a different animal's babies, which doesn't help in passing on one's own genes!

3. So what does this mean?

In general, you could say that in nature, the most optimal thing is for you (regardless of gender) to have multiple partners, but your partners only have you.

Obviously, this does not work out very nicely mathematically! So why has it turned out that men seem more polygamous, rather than women? Both would ideally have many partners, after all!

4. So why do men seem more polygamous than women?

And this is where more socialization comes into play. Yes, it's easier for men to be with more partners because women will be stuck with babies, but I don't think that's the biggest factor today. I think it has more to do with men being raised to see women sexually, and women being raised to see men romantically.

Maybe these views once had a biological purpose, but they aren't needed anymore - as far as human survival goes, it's okay for men to want their "one true love" or women to want some good no-strings-attached sex. So I don't think the "nature" argument can fully explain the more polygamous tendencies of men, nor is it any excuse for any partner to violate the ground rules of the relationship. (Unless you're in an open relationship, of course, in which case welcome to the club!)

The truth is, human nature is a tricky thing, and polygamy isn't any more likely than anything else to be part of it.

Anyway, props to you for asking this important question.

My hubby says that he isn't polygamous by nature. He says that as long as you are satisfied by one woman, there is no need to go elsewhere for anything. He said he wouldn't even consider it, not for other children, not for more sex, not for anything. He says it's way too much responsibility and too much moolah to care of just one family, let alone another wife and more children. I told him that he could be smart and marry a really rich wife, with her own perfession that would yeild high income, and he still said no. Guess it just goes to show that if your man is happy, all is well!!

Maybe not polygamous but biologically it's in the best evolutionary interest to spread the seed as much as possible for continuation of one's 'line'. Women evolved to where selection of the best mate (for successful offspring) is key; therefore, women would tend to want to keep a selected mate for continued reproductive purposes. That said, we also developed sentience and a psychological self that adds major levels of complexity to the basic biological foundation.

By nature, men are no different from beasts, and act like beasts if they are not controlled by proper laws, and even when they have the right laws, they will alter them here and there to satisfy their own lusts.

Those who say their religion allows only one wife think they are smart when they act out their beastly nature, and those who say they are entitled to more than one wife, fail to act responsibly according to the law that allows more than one and so they remain as beastly as the others.

Unfortunately, yes. From time long ago, when men were still barbarians, they would find more women to propogate. This is to ensure that they sow more seeds and the chance of their heir surviving would be higher. Animals tend to to have in-born traits like this, and in this aspect, some men would be like animals.

There is not a single woman on earth that can meet all the needs of a man.
Thats why the Scriptures teach that a man can have many wives.
