Depends what time of year, winter= big waves on north shore; summer= small waves on N. shore. Ask the lifeguard because there are currents. Thee are many safe beaches, summertime, Waimea Bay, Ehukai, just don't get too far out, the currents might drag u farther out.

The safest would have to be Haleiwa Beach Park. But personally if you have children with you I'd stay at Ala Moana Beach or even Makapu'u Beach which has tide pools that kids can get into. North Shore is safe when the waves aren't big so best time to not go to the North Shore to swim is during the Winter Time, this is when the swells on the North Shore come rolling on in and just standing on the side to enjoy the sites of the waves rolling in would be safes. Good Luck, Have Fun and Stay Safe.

AS you have been told, the surf in the No. Shore is basically flat during summer.. starting to Pick up around the first of October. I would suggest that you always go to a beach in Hawaii where a lifeguard is. I know the water looks like it does where you live, but it is completely different and most drownings happen along the beaches that have no lifeguards are. Even very experienced swimmers have drowned... Hawaii is famous for strong riptides and you can get into one and get tired very fast. If you going to be over here within a month or so.. go to Waimea, there is a lifeguard on duty.. there are also lifeguards at Sunset Beach , Pipeline and a few others.. Be safe is the best advice that can be given... Aloha!

generally, North Shore beaches are safe in the summer. Waves and swells are bigger in the winter months. The safest is probably Hale'iwa. It's a quaint town to visit too. You might check out Waimea Bay if you like jumping off rocks!
