definitely ask your local bait and tackle shop what everyone is using for salmon. be careful when you fish salmon - when they hook-up they take off--with a lot of your line -- make sure your drag is a little bit tighter than usual and i would recommend at least 12 pound line if fishing a lake -- for a river maybe a bit heavier. check with the rules and regulations of the area your fishing -- remeber this -- salmon and trout are from the same family -- therefore they both enjoy similar food - you can never go wrong with big night crawlers and crayfish -- if you are allowed to use smelt those are deadly too.

A good bait is salmon or trout eggs they also like spoons and fly's and they live in fresh water deep in the lakes in Canada and than travel up stream to spawn and die but young ones also follow so do trout so you never know what you might catch

Everyone has their own favorite bait for Salmon...I just asked my husband your exact same question the other day when we were trout fishing. He swears by prawns for salmon fishing...hasn't failed him yet.

a worm or an artifical fly are good baits and you can catch them in fresh or salt water, you should have a better chance in fresh water streams/rivers tho. ask at the local tackle shop for best advice.

They eat herring when they are in salt water. Then they stop eating and head up fresh water river looking for love...
