Has he been diagnosed by a pediatric neurologist? If not, try not to be tempted into believing your son has the ADHD until you get the right doctor making the diagnosis. Just because an MD or pediatrician can prescribe Ritalin, doesn't mean they are qualified to make a proper diagnosis. There are even teachers out there who are making unqualified diagnoses and requesting (or requiring) kids to be on medication to be in class. When I was in college taking education classes we were given a quiz with symptoms of ADHD. It was kind of funny because better than half of the class (all future teachers) had enough "symptoms" of ADHD to warrant a referral to a doctor.

We were also told a story about a teacher requiring a kid be on medication to be in class (not sanctioned by the principal). The parent gave their son vitamins and told him and the teacher that he was now on Ritalin. The kid confirmed it because, of course, he thought he was. The teacher then remarked on the boy's amazing progress and how his behavior had improved markedly. Of course, he wasn't on it anything. It was mostly the teacher's belief that the boy was on medication that attributed to these false reports. The parent took this information to the principal and the teacher was disciplined for her medication request.

The truth is, only a small portion of the population has it. There are many psychological reasons why kids act up at various times. They can be stressed just like the rest of us. So make sure you get the right referral if you are seriously worried about this uncommon condition.
