Yes, because even though it has fewer calories than regular soda, there is something in diet soda that makes you hungry/makes you crave more food. So while you think that you're getting your soda fix without the calories and fat, you're really putting yourself in a position where you will eat more when you actually do eat. My best advice is either save soda as a special treat and have the real stuff to satisfy your craving, or quit it altogether. If you're worried about your weight, diet soda shouldn't be an alternative. If you're worried about your weight, stick with water and some juices (though eating the fruits instead of the juices made from them is preferable because juices tend to have a lot of sugar). I'm also anti diet soda because they use aspartame, an ingredient that can actually cause gas and it can even kill your pets. If a dog eats a pack of sugar free gum he/she can die. I even read an article recently that an effective pest control method involves using aspartame to kill rats. So, if it can kill dogs and rats, I don't think humans should be ingesting it. My advice, don't reach for the diet soda.

I know I know, I hate when people cut and paste, but this seemed to explain it without getting to long. I say, it's not that good for you, diet or not, so make soda a treat not an everyday drink, and stick with the real stuff!
While these drinks are marketed to those who are weight conscious, no published study has shown that drinking diet soda will cause a person to lose weight. Changing the food energy intake from one food will not necessarily change a person's overall food energy intake, or cause a person to lose weight. One study [1], at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, reported by Sharon Fowler at the ADA annual meeting, actually suggested the opposite, where consumption of diet soda was correlated with weight gain. While Fowler did suggest that the undelivered expected calories from diet soda may stimulate the appetite, the correlation does not prove that consumption of diet soda caused the weight gain. The weight gain may have caused the consumption of diet soda. The ADA has yet to issue an updated policy concerning diet soda, and may face a conflict of interest in doing so, as they are now in partnership with candy and soda companies [2].

CNN discussed this issue the other day and yes, diet soda can make you fat. Many people feel that since their drink of choice is diet, they can splurge calories in other areas, thus packing on the weight gain. So if you can eat in moderation and not compensate calories after drinking the diet soda, you will not get fat. If you feel that you can "afford" to eat this extra slice of pizza because you are chasing it down with a diet soda, then no.

I think diet soda is better than soda as less sugar. If anything it can make you bloated with all the gases inside the actual soda but i think you can gain weight if you like drink 10 a day really. Its more bloated

Absolutely, do you ever see skinny people drinking diet soda pop? Diet soda pop has too much sodium in it. The sodium makes you gain weight.

ok, i dont know if this will make any since but i will try to explain it. i agree with all of the people who said it was bad and all of their reasons. and i would like to add this one that i heard recently. there was a study done on diet colas and the effects that it has on your body. one of the results said that because you are drinking the artificially sweetened soda it tracks your body in believing that all sweetened substances are ok and even good for you and so you body starts to crave these things. only not all sweetened real or otherwise are good so you gain weight. this is suppose to be true for all artificially sweetened items.

My doctor told me that Diet soda was bad for you because it develops your appetite for sweet things and stimulates your appetite in general. I used to sip on it all day and it seemed I was always hungry. Yet once when I was on a modified Atkins diet where I gave up all sweets, artificial or regular, I was almost never hungry.

All soda has a lot of sodium in it, which doesn't necessarily make you fat but it certainly makes you look bloated. Your best bet is low sodium, or water if you prefer.

No it won't. 0 calories = 0 carbs/energy/fat. Although drinking any type of soda could increase your cravings for sweets which can result in weight gain.
