I know from one of the other members that lenses are the most important thing in an SLR, but I was wondering which SLR would be good for a beginner photographer, I'm not a complete beginner, I have taken classes and such, so I do know what I'm doing witha camera, so it doesnt need to be basic.

I hope that made sense, thanks!

Like you, I'm going to go digital soon and I'm probably buying a Canon XT or D20. The D20 is a more professional camera body. It's larger but faster and you can make adjustments as you shoot. The XT is a great digital camera for both amateurs and professionals. I'm sure that an XT used properly and with a good lens will take professional-looking pictures. But I want to go seriously into the photography business specializing in pet photography, so the D20 might be a better choice for me. It costs $300 more, but I may keep it for a long time instead of upgrading to a more professional camera later on. However, if my budget doesn't allow me to get one, I'd go with the XT. It's around $700 and sometimes it does come with a Canon EF-S lens that can be good for a start - like 18-55mm. Canon L series lenses are the best, but they are more expensive.
The Nikon D70s is also a good digital camera, comparable to the XT. It only has fewer Megapixels (6 instead of 8) but if you aren't printing in a very large format, it won't matter. If you choose Nikon, go for Nikkor lenses though. The bodies usually come with a Quantaray lens that is not bad, but doesn't perform as well as Nikkor (Nikon) lenses.
Whatever your choice, remember that a good camera with a mediocre lens will take worse pictures than a mediocre camera body with a good lens. But it seems you already know that, so, if you want to save money to invest in lenses, I'd suggest you get a Canon XT or a Nikon D70s.

SLR is old technology for the camera with all the lenses, if you check most of the cheaper digital cameras go the same range as traditional SLRs. My fav SLR was a Nikon but I traded it in for a Cannon digital. Do quite a bit of research before you lay out your cash. A good start would be the link below.

Here's another vote for the Nikon D50.

Or, you might want to check with www.keh.com and see if they have a reasonably priced Nikon D70S from someone who's moved up to the more expensive D200. Get the Nikkor kit lens to start with (make sure it is marked DX so you don't have to deal with the cropping factor like with the regular film camera lenses that also fit all Nikon cameras, too).

ARRRRRGGGHHHH!!! Canon users... :-) Just kidding. As you can tell by my name I would suggest the Nikon D-70 but depending on what equipment you have now will dictate your choice. If you have a bag full of Canon lenses I say go Canon and vice versa. Nikon and Canon are both great camera systems and even though I am a Nikon biased photographer, I don't think one is better than the other, it's your choice though. Going from Nikon to Canon is not hard it's just weird, your lenses focus the other wat and the buttonds a dials are different but they are both good cameras. Good luck and Happy Shooting!

Don't think of beginners camera. Coz even though you're just starting to dig yourself in the SLR world sooner or later you will jump or aim to a higher specs or a high end one. So in the end you will buy two camera.

NIKON is my preference in digicam D50 is quite old, D70s is in the middle generation, D200 is new but quite high specs already for starters, but D80 is coming...

I tried 350D of Cannon but I am not impress. sorry canonians...!!!

most SLRs are as manual or automatic as you desire to make them. i'll put my $.02 in for the Canon XT. There is a new version, XTi or 400D that is out. i'm sure it will be great. you can save a few bucks and get the XT while people unload it. it will serve your needs just fine. I haven't looked at prices lately, but saw body only for $650 at buydig.com

lenses are where you should save and spend the money. good advice. good luck.

Canon and Niko both make great SLR for the consumer world. Do your reasearch and find the one that has the features you want then shop around for the best price.

I suggest the Nikon D50. It's fairly simple, yet you can add to it as you get more experience.
