...Assuming the workout is one of those where you know that you over-did it, and you know that you're going to be sore the next day.

(i know, best thing is to not overdo it in the first place, but I'm a dumb***.)

I'd appreciate anyone that can add an explanation of why they'd recommend what it is that they recommend.

PS: Over the counter only, please.

We're talking general muscle pain from muscle exertion, not from pulling or straining anything.

if you know you are going to be sore than you should ice the places that hurt already and the places you have prblems with usually hurting after a workout. and take a long-lasting pain releiver before you go to bed so that you dont wake up iwht pain everywhere. then once you have waited the time allowed, take some more of the medicine you took before and keep icing the pain in the legs, arms, and back. also rotate between heating pads and ice so that it can relieve the pain and then realx it away. good luck with everything!

I always use Tylenol Extra Strength, 2x 500mg (so 1000mg doses). I get it from a hospital since I work there so I don't know what doses are available OTC but 1000mg every 6 hours works good for a day or two for sore muscles. If you're working out often though, and you're going to take the pain killers often, don't do what I said. When I work out regularly I don't pain killers. The pain is your body letting you know it needs to recover, and I base my workouts from what my body says. BUT, if its a rare hardcore workout, or manual labor you can try what I suggest.

**Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, or certified in medicine in any way. While the above works for me, you should always follow the directions on the package, and consult your doctor for extended use.

Im no doctor but I play one at Yahoo answers. Really though, my non medical opinion would really be asprin. As weak as it seems sometimes, it slows the heart rate down as the heart is just coming off overdrive during the workout, making asprin a tad more safer after working out, if u ask me. Oh u did, lol. Excedrin and such which is good to kill pain, contains caffine, which of course pumps the heart, which after strenous work out, dont seem like a bright idea.Perscription killers dont sound so hot either. When working out u inhale alot of oxygen, though good for the brain, seems to me like prescript drugs would make me even more dizzy or light headed than they usually do alone. Well thats my opinion. Hope it helps u decide.

Motrin it is an excellent anti inflammatory. Most people don't take enough if you are a full grown adult male take 800 mg every 4 to 6 hours. Advil is one brand name but they are all the same Generic or not read the package they are usually 200 mg per pill so you would need to take 4.

It happens all the time. You should get BCAA, Glutamine and Arginine. Take them as instructed on the labels or according to the advice from an expert. In addtion, you should take fish (body)
oil which contains EPA and DHA. EPA is anti-inflammatory. And also olive oil. Spread olive oil generously to your toast instead of butter or swallow a spoon or two of olive oil (extra virgin preferable) if you can stand the taste, especially after eating fruits.
Your pain would be reduced significantly to a comforting level.

Drink water. Most muscle soreness is from lactic acid. Best drug to take for your knee pain would be aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen; called NSAID or anti-inflammatory.

water to flush out the acid build up from the strenuous workout and ibuprofen or acetaminofen for the pain (take at bedtime and then again in the morning)

Anything that has an anti-inflammatory as an active ingredient. Like Robacicet or any of the generic equivalents.

I like motrin! I had to take it for a gall bladder attack, (muscle related) and it worked like a dream! Tylenol didnt do anything and neither did Advil. But the motrin allowed me to go back to sleep.
