While I can't speak for another person, I have been overweight most of my life (anywhere from 50 - 100 lbs). There have been times in my life (much like an alcoholic) that I've "given up" and didn't really care what I was ultimately doing to myself. I would go thru periods of extreme eating, which I thought would make me feel better. It was a quick fix for the time being, but ultimately it ended up hurting me. When I finally came out of the "given up" stage, then I would take better care of myself and lose the weight. It's a hard thing really. I've tried to explain it to my husband and friends this way. When you have a problem with eating (eating disorder of any kind), you are conscious that you are gaining weight, but you can't seem to stop (again referring to an alcoholic). Once you do get your eating under control, you have to be careful each time you eat. An alcoholic needs to stay away from alcohol (of course), but an over eater has it much harder because you MUST eat to live. When an over eater is "active" (for lack of a better word) you feel that you "live to eat". It's hard for most people, who do not have this problem, to understand what myself and many, many other people go thru.
Have a lovely rest of the evening.

You think that every day. But you are too fat to move and your metabolism is so screwed up that you gain weight on less food. It's a horrible downward spiral. Have some compassion rather than being judgmental.

Some people are depressed, or it's genetic. Some people try & can't lose the weight.
