Since I was one...I'll tell you that many require about 60 credit hrs of college or a military background. I highly recommend the college if you have not already done so. Although police work is about 5% book smarts and about 95% common sense, if you are a white male, you will not get on a police department with just a HS education unless you are extremely politically connected. The college will definitely bring you over the edge. I have tons of experience dealing with this B.S. When I was trying to get hired. I had only a HS diploma but I had 8 years experience as an MP in the Army. Those 8 years were all strictly law enforcement, very little field duty. Even with that, I was still being passed over for less qualified and less experienced minorities, and by minorities, I mean everyone except average every day white dudes like me. Good luck, and go to school. If you try it without a degree you are wasting your time.

A friend of mine in college was going to be a police officer - he majored in History. You will need to have an understanding of basic law principles, government and civics, so a history degree helps with these requirements. Check with your state/county/district police department and see what they suggest.
