To the inferior animals, fear comes from instinct. They feel what might hurt them and try to stay away from that. To the superior animals called "humans", fear comes both from instinct and knowledge. It is an uncontrollable (most of the times) emotion triggered by a strong sense of danger. Fear can also come from something that is not natural or does not correspond to the common sense: fear of flight (it is not normal for humans to be able to fly).
