What do you think would/could happen if EACH of us would start to think and act towards "others" according to how we would like to be treated by others?

If everyone would truly do that, there would be no hungry kids, no homeless people, no neglected old folks, no abused children...
We could fire the cops, we wouldn't need 'em any more...
Heck, we could even do away with governments altogether
There would be no more war....
The world would become...dare I say it???....a Paradise!!

Come to think of it, Someone Else had that idea, about 2,000 years ago. Nobody liked it much then, either....

I think you're on to something here. Very good idea! I don't know what would happen, because once again we would still have the "rotten apples" in every bunch. Most people are inherently good/honest/well-meaning people, but some people will insist that harming others is their preference to how they like to be treated.

Possibly and hopefully....your idea could change our world for the better, at least we could easily identify the "rotten apples", by their actions towards others.

Imagine that. I could then go for a walk without being terrified I would be shot or robbed. Do you have any idea how badly I want to go for a stroll!? I thought about walking to the train the other day but decided against it. As I drove to the train I saw what I would have had to walk through. Gang members just hanging out. I don't know how long I can stop myself from smoking all those bastards that make life difficult for the rest of us!

It would be a good start, but primary and secondary education, on a much more strict level, would need to play a key role, preparing people living in communities and society to behave differently, with less emphasis on what is a right and what is a personal responsibility. Now we have 2 generations of people spoiled, expecting handouts and no negative consequences for unacceptable behaviour toward others.

I think we should have both. There should be a clause with what you are saying, ie that you can only treat others like you treat yourself if you have a good level of self esteem. Its like it says in the bible, treat your neighbor as you treat yourself, however alot of us dont like ourselves for some reason or another. So IN closing you can only do this if you are being nice to yourself.
One more point and i know its veering off your question, but nowhere in th bible does it say be nice to your self, or that you are wonderful etc....so no wonder we are all so buggered. Good question tho!!!!!

Apologies to anyone who has not read the bible or is not of christian faith

As members of human society we have rights and responsibilities in equal measure, so you're on the right lines but it would have to be a Bill of Human Rights *and* Responsibilities.

I think alot of people would keep quiet on that one. They all want their rights but no responsibilities. Kinda like the kids that sign up for the military to get college money but then they complain when they go off to war. Just want to take, not give

It will never fly. People today are on the whole too self-centered.

We'd have to make a lot of changes to even begin to get to the point you're suggesting.

It would be nice though.

First of all, I think the reponsibilities are covered pretty well by the 10 commandments.
What would happen?
There would be no more wars, murders, robberies, child abuse, rapes, fraud, domestic violence, scams, road rage, adultery, gossip, or Fox News.

i like that idea. unfortunatley, a bill can't force a change of behaviors and thinking; such changes would have be made by the individual.

but what if? a respectable and respectful society. sounds like utopiaaaaaa!!!!
